Can the gaps in your spell list be removed?

Is there a simple fix that can get rid of the gaps that appear in the list when you're picking a spell to cast? I've been informed that this has something to do with the option to cast spells from F-keys, but I don't mind losing that functionality because it doesn't work for me, nor would I use it if it did.
