Boo says, Vote!

Again, feel free to share your reasoning.
  1. Boo's NPC Polls Part 9: Who is the Ravest Ranger?109 votes
    1. Minsc (Butt-kicking for Goodness!)
      41.28%
    2. Valygar (I have stamina and patience, but both are wearing thin. It is time to vote for me)
      17.43%
    3. Kivan (grrrrr.)
      25.69%
    4. Boo without Minsc
      11.93%
    5. Just show me the results (this option does NOT "mean all of the above")
        3.67%

Bishop, mainly because of his Chaotic Evil alignment and sarcastic personality. Never liked any of those good aligned Aragorn ranger clones from AD&D.

    I like all of them!

Minsc was always a favorite but I think I overplayed him. In the thrilling personality race, Kivan gets the slight edge over Valygar. And since I never play BG1 w/o Kivan, he gets my vote.

Man I remember when this poll was done before, it was suuuuuch a close tie between Kivan and Minsc, until finally Minsc truly pulled ahead.

    Kivan forever!!

Kivan gets bonus points for being the only one really good with bows.

Because for me, ranger = archery. :)

There should be an option for "Minsc and Boo" because Minsc is not Minsc without his Boo.

    Boo is Minsc's beau

I don't consider any of them good enough, chose Boo only because I don't know his stats to judge him :)

Valygar because he reminds me of myself.

Quietly intense and isn't afraid to speak up. And he will take precisely none of your bullshit.

Well, Kivan is one of my BG1 favorites and he's one of the most backgrounded characters in BG1, so... I like him quite much and he's good both in melee and ranged.

Kivan benefits a LOT from the BG1 NPC Project. I can't wait for it to be compatible with the EEs.
Also has a cool mod for BG2

Yep, yep, I know, that's why I want to play Good-aligned with party again, with SCS and BG1 NPC project.
    Edit: fixed a heavy mistake.

Sorry, it just has to be Minsc. No contest.

    @nonnahswriter
Totally agree! When I install BG1NPC Project I change him to archer. Now that I use EEKeeper I do the same thing.
I also make Anomen a Fighter--> Priest of Helm, Imoen an thief-->Illusionist, Ajantis an Inquisitor, Xan a sorcerer, Aerie an Illusionist/cleric, Safana a Swashbuckler and Montaron an Assassin/Fighter for roleplaying purposes. In my latest game I made Mazzy and Undead Hunter (she learned from fighting the Shade Lord)

I would make Minsc a Beastmaster if it wasn't so limiting. Also will probably make Shar-Teel a berserker if I ever play with her. When I install Divine Remix I give Branwen the Priest of Tempus kit and Tiax the Mask of Cyric kit.

I am contemplating making a redeemed Sarevok a Paladin of some sort in ToB, but I am undecided since I don't know if that is necessarily the best direction. It is tempting though.

Valgyar has personality! It's just... very... quiet. And solemn. And magic hating. But it's there. I swear, if you squint, you can see it.

I like Kivan, too. Minsc, I've played too often. He's sort of worn thin.

Valygar suffers from a lack of attentive writing in the later stages, but he by no means suffers from lack of a personality. The fact that his personality is quiet and contemplative stands in stark contrast to Minsc's. Moreso than any other character (save for romances, non-romance Jaheira, non-romance Anomen, and Imoen) Valygar interacts with the PC, which is nice.

Kivan had a distinctly non-elven personality. In addition, his personality was bad: I think it was a first take at the personality that Valygar actually got right.

Minsc, as popular as he is, would have been a Barbarian had the option been available when BG1 was being created. We probably would have lost Boo as a result though, which would be sad. That said, Minsc has always seemed more Barbarian than Ranger to me. I prefer Valygar to him either way though: Minsc becomes a headache after you've ran through with him a couple of times. The humour doesn't repeat well: he's like Joey out of Friends, that way.

I always liked Kivan, but Valygar made me like the Ranger class in general. Kivan counts as fighter to me, he doesn't feel very ranger-y. He wants revenge, sure, but so do others (notably Dorn). Valygar does have a personality, and lucky for him, one that is a must have for my mage-hating jester's party.

@recklessheart: Boo wouldn't neccessarily be a casualty of Minsc becoming a Barbarian. He could be a Barbarian thinking he is a ranger, and hence grab the next best rodent as his animal companion. I like the assassin-pretending-(badly)-to-be-a-priest-of-lathander in Black Pits 2, too.

Kivan was my favorite character growing up, along with Minsc. I actually made rangers because I thought those two were so cool. My triple ranger party was fun to play, and it became my favorite class (especially after reading the Drizzt books as a kid, lol)
After getting a little older I kinda fell out of love with the class (and the Drizzt books, not that I hate them or anything) and became less fond of rangers. Minsc is my favorite character, and the most memorable for me. After a bazillion playthroughs, however, he does get a little stale and there is little to him other than comic relief as well as some tragedy with Dynaheir dying. I still find him the most iconic though, so he's still number one and I feel horrible not taking him (but not as horrible as not taking Imoen)
I really missed Kivan after a long absence from playing BG1 but the EEs made me take him up again, so he was totally fresh. I actually really love his soundset. (I find the way he growls to be really funny)

Kivan is the best ranger. He kicks ass and takes names, especially if you change his kit to Archer.

Can't argue with miniature Space Hamsters, he is the comical relief in my party everytime!

I fail to see how this is a question

I know this feeling so much! Except oddly I don't have it with either of them, but rather with Jaheira. There just never seems like a realistic opportunity for any of my PCs to ask her to leave! I certainly wouldn't ditch her the minute I surface in Athkatla, seeing as she knows the city and many of the people in it. Yet after the incident with Galvarey ditching her seems so heartless, and she gets upset and disappears forever. Jaheira easily sacrifices more than any other character for the purposes of helping CHARNAME along their journey. Huge guilt on the occasional playthroughs for which she is not with me.

Sorry. That might be the beginnings of derailing the thread, but when I read that I had to extend my sympathies!

    Back to rangers, guys! :)

    My choices would be...
    1) Valygar
    2) Minsc

But then, i simply saw the "Boo without Minsc" option... No one beats the giant space hamster!

Kivan - he is super badass ^^ I like the vengeful halberd-wielding type.
I like all the other rangers too - Minsc in spot number two i think.

Come on, it's Minsc. Butt-kicking for goodness! I gave him my vote, but I'm also a big Kivan fan.

I like Valygar too, but I almost never keep him after he opens the Planar Sphere, just because it seems they stopped writing any dialogue for him about midway through SoA. It's not fair to him, really. He makes a really good scout and backstabber.
  • booinyoureyesbooinyoureyes Member Posts: 6,164
@recklessheart I don't think that is derailing, and I really find that conversation interesting. I'd love to hear what other's think on that, but perhaps on a different thread in the future. (I love Jaheira too, and I feel guilty ditching her as a male charname simply because her leaving dialogue breaks my heart, lol)
