Can I save between the mac and ipad versions?

I'm hoping to buy BGII, and I use both a Mac and an iPad. I seem to remember hearing there were plans to have some sort method for games to be saved in such a way that the same game could be accessed on multiple machines. Is this the case, or is it planned? Also, I've seen some complaints about the ipad version. Would you all suggest the mac version if I only bought one?

You refer to the "cloud save" feature which is announced but not available yet. But you can transfer manually as described here

which works like a charm (I have both mac and ipad version).

Opinions are divided on ipad, esp the interface, there are some here that consider it the best thing since sliced bread but personally I find it too tedious and slow with a party due to lack of keyboard shortcuts and party rotation feature. Ok for solos but not for full party runs. Also BG2EE still with some bugs and since ipad version doen't have the console impoosible to do the required wirkarounds.

I recommend you get the mac version but from beamdog and not app store since ut takes weeks for the patches to be available there.

I often move saves between Windows 7 and iPad, so I imagine Mac would be even easier. I'm not sure who would have called the iPad version "greatest thing since sliced bread"; the portability of it is awesome. But I do think it plays better on a full computer. Not that there's any real problems on the iPad, just a slightly different feel to the interface, and a few tricks to learn.
