Just curious as to what the results will be. Personaly I've not tried any of them, though shadow dancer has always had a flavor and style that I've liked.

Smacks of flavor - this kit got me to finally roll a monk.

My first is Blackguard; It made play a Paladin.
Second is Dark Moon Monk; same reasons as jackjack, it made me play a Monk.

Dragon Disciple!... Oh, who am I kidding here? It's a pitiful kit compared to the original prestige class from both 3rd and 3.5th editions. Not to mention their epic level progressions. This kit truly needs to be overhauled by Overhaul, or at least a good deal enhanced.

On a more serious note, the best new kit from my point of view is the Dark Moon Monk kit. My reasoning behind this claim is due to the fact that the Dark Moon Monk is the only new kit, which isn't simply based on a prestige class from PnP. True, one could argue that the Dark Moon Monk was already implemented in Icewind Dale II, but that doesn't make these dark monks any less unique in my eyes.

Blackguards are downright overpowered in BG1. Poison is the most broken mechanic in the entire series

First CRPG to do them right too. The prestige class in the Neverwinter Nights was an abomination.

Exactly the same feeling as EnterHaerDalis.
Poison is completely broken and that alone makes the blackguard the best new kit.

Dark moon monk is also very good, especially for detect illusion.

RDD is very strong (since it is a sorceror) but it is also weaker than the vanilla sorc

    I picked Dragon Disciple because it's my favorite, but it's probably the weakest of them all. ;_;

Blackguard is pretty awesome though, if only for the sake of having evil paladins. >:D

Because it actually made me want to roll a monk.
Hopefully I'll manage to finish my current game first though, and beat this nasty case of restartitis I feel coming on.

As a Thief fan, I find Shadowdancer somewhat disappointing.

Anyway Blackguard is fun to play; only funky thing about it is that, with the Poison Weapon ability, one feels the need to use ranged weaponry (what with their epic APR), but Blackguard really strikes me as a sword and board class. I particularly enjoyed taking a Blackguard Large Shield + Stupifier all the way to Cloakwood and then of course inevitably restarting because I can never role-play Evil satisfyingly enough for myself. Even still, running around with a Blackguard with a mace and large shield felt pretty badass and properly anti-paladin.

Sun Soul Monk is pretty neat. While you lose the classic Monk abilities, you gain some other interesting ones. I'm particularly fond of the Fire Shield, because a Defensive ability for a Monk is very interesting indeed. I hear that Sun Soul Ray is broken and going to be fixed/nerfed? Dunno much about that. Flaming Fists is kind of lame. Overall though very neat kit.

Dark Moon Monk seems drastically underpowered but as @Kamigoroshi pointed out, the novelty and imagination of it is good.

Dwarven Defender whoooooa race specific kit? Scary territory they're venturing into, and the kit isn't imaginative at all. My Dwarves tend to either be Fighter/Clerics, Clerics, Fighter/Thieves, or Thieves, though, so I haven't used it and probably never will. d12 hit die is always fun though, teehee.

Dragon Disciple lawl wut no. Seems lame, and I think the RP concept of a Sorceror is really boring; Dragon Disciple, even more ridiculous and boring. No thanks.

@Quartz Cloakwood is like... the ONLY place in the saga where you can truly RP evil! You can
pointlessly drown a mine full of civilians just for kicks
for god's sake, what's more evil than that? After that there's really only Dorn's BG2 missions where you can be truly, unambiguously vile.

I have no aversion to any of the new kits, I have to be honest! I think they are all pretty good. I like the Dragon Disciple much more than that implemented in NWN: I channel the raw arcane energy passed down to me by an ancient dragon - the most powerful species in Faerun - and the end result of pursuing this path is a lack of spells and some mediocre abilities better earned by multiclassing to fighter. At least that's how I saw it; I never subscribed to power builds of paladin lvl3/ sorcerer lvl6/ dragon disciple lvl11, or whatever people did with the classes in NWN.

Other than the Dwarven Defender its the only one I actually enjoy playing. Especially since I can RP it and choose my spells to be more along the lines of something a dragon might use. So I'll say its the best new kit though many would probably disagree.

Blackguard. VERY, interesting. I was torn between dragon disciple, dwarf defender and blackguard, and it was a tough choice, but i did it! Antipaladin ftw!
  • KalesraKalesra Member Posts: 234
I was in love with my new Blackguard character and still think the kit is awesome (a paladin...of EVIL! With poison!) But I have a shadowdancer/fighter dual in my most recent game so shadowdancer is my current favorite. I've never played a thief of any kind before, and stabbing everything in the back and then the face and then the back with Celestial Fury until they all die is pretty sick. So is being able to disappear from sight at will. I know eventually I'll get tired of it (maybe?) and there are plenty of things that are immune to my backstab, but for now I'm having a stabbin' good time.

I've only tried it a little bit, but I too really enjoy the Shadowdancer kit. I just really dislike its name.

Come on, man. It's an awesome name. It's like....you're a dancer, you know? A dancer who dances in the shadows. A graceful but deadly--

OK, fine, I see your point. :P

I just wish the Dragon Disciple had more uses of the breath weapon than 1/day. I like the class a lot, but they're definitely under powered compared to a sorcerer, and I think this would fix it.
  • KalesraKalesra Member Posts: 234

I don't like Dwarven Defender as name. It's so... boring.

And totally confusing. Is it a defender of arbitrary things that need defending, who is also a dwarf? Or is it a defender of dwarves? I couldn't figure out if I was supposed to defend everyone, or only dwarves (and there weren't even many of those around to defend), so I gave up. :P

jk...never even played that kit. I've actually never even played a dwarf.

Before I vote, is this a "best" or "most awesome-cool" poll?
  • booinyoureyesbooinyoureyes Member Posts: 6,164
I went with most awesome. I don't really like evil protagonists but this kit is making me excited for my evil play through in which I'll finally do the viconia romance.
It was a toss up overall though. Dragon disciple is just such a sweet concept, but I just wish it had some more benefits. Also think shadow dancer is pretty sweet.
Overall I like them all really. The kits might be one of the best addition from the Enhanced Editions, since they are all pretty neat.

My dwarven defender is beastly. My dragon disciple is pretty cool too.
