But how far can you zoom in I wonder... I don't think sprites are that detailed that when you get really close, you'd see them as very pixelated and for that matter, ugly.

If i remember correctly, upscaling should remove pixelations for enlarging images, except if you zoom too much on a high resolution, in that case to avoid pixelation the game would add blur a bit i think.
This is not happening in the old BG version, the sprites are pixelated since you see a 640x480 or 800x600 resolution on a widescreen large moniror, while the widescreen mod only makes sprites smaller, but still you can detect the pixelation.
Beamdog cannot change the source art but i'm pretty sure they can clear up the pixelation for the most part with upscaling.
Will be for sure awesome to play in 1920x1980 with not too small characters then
But i wonder if they have made a bit more progress in terms of sharpening the picture or if it will look as already have been seen in some screenshots in the screenshot analysis thread, where even the new screenshots looked partly blurry.
And since releasetime is getting more and more close, the absence of any real showcase material, and any real answer is a bit.. disturbing.
Quite a lot of people, also in some big german Baldur's Gate boards really fear that when using the announced zooming feature, since its a VERY big step from 640x800/800x600 up to 1920x1080 - that we will end up in a big fuzzyness, screen-wise.
The final question which does indeed appear is if it does get ugly when zooming in higher resolutions - above 1024 x 768 - or not.
And i really wonder a bit why we dont get screenshots which show resolutions around 1920 x 1080 - all screenshots we got where in the lower resolution area and none in the higher ones.
Maybe they are still not done with upscaling of the sprites. Or they are always in the search for something even better.
Who knows.
It does raise some questions, i'll give you that, we can only wait to see what happens.
However in the screenshots of the Black Pits, i could see a more sharpened and non pixelated version of an elven fighter or cleric sprite compared to the one i'm seeing in my game (the merchant on the left).
