I'm stuck in the tutorial, casting clerical spells. Why?

I have gotten the cleric Branwen to cast a bunch of spells. She chants, and the special effects are excellent. I made her create a monster, and I am pretty sure I targeted Belt with at least two of her spells. (Is there a way to know, while I am paused, that I have selected someone as my target?)
Each time, after the spell fires, the dialog tells me I haven't cast a (clerical) spell yet. Please try to guess what I am doing wrong. Thanks!
