Quirk in Durlag's Tower Labyrinth L3 **SPOILER**

I was having a hard time defeating the Wyverns on this level, then I had an idea -- how about if I lured them into the Fireball room to certain death? So I tried it......

I hide 5 of the part up in to top right corner out of sight, then with one party member with boots of haste, lures a Wyvern across the room and then into the tunnel leading to the Fireball room. The character then sprints across the room (at the right moment to avoid the fireball) and into the exit tunnel. The Wyvern follows down the tunnel as planned, but then stops at the entrance to the fireball room, presumably because it it too big to fit through the doorway, so it just sit there looking at the one character on the other side of the room. The other 5 party members then had a look to see what it was doing and tentatively took a shot at it. Well it didn't move at all, just kept staring at the one character across the room! It stayed there till it died from arrows and bullets and a few Magic Missiles to relieve the boredom!

Rinse and Repeat til Wyverns all gone!

Is this supposed to happen? I take it not, but it works!

There are ways to exploit creatures and enemies like this in the game, both in BG1 and BG2. You'll be able to win some fights by throwing AoE spells into a room with the enemies and lock the door. They won't be able to open the door and will die from the AoE spells.

Once you learn how the AI works, the game is pretty simple without mods that enhance the AI (SSC).

In this case, I prefer to think of it as Wyverns being pretty dumb creatures. I don't have a problem believing you could lure a beast such as this into a trap where he could get it but not out again. If it can't turn around in the tunnel then it may well have trouble getting out!

If humanoid characters did it, then it would be less believable and more as an exploit.

I'm not sure how the AI works, but if it takes into account the INT of a creature then it got it right in this case IMO!

Yeah honestly, the thought of a wyvern that can open doors is something I just don't want to think about.
