Charname class request - iPad difficulties

Hello forum. I have a character class recommendation request, but I have some parameters. My main difficulty - this is my first BG experience, and the iPad Mini presents some difficulties. Backstabbing is almost impossible for me - I just can't get accuracy in placing characters. At the very best I can put a character in a general area.
Next is spellcasting - it is also difficult for me. There are just so many icons, and getting the gist of what each icon does (and they tend to look alike on my screen) is difficult when I have rows and rows. I'm not opposed to spellcasting, but it can become tedious searching for the spells I need each round on the iPad.
Third is that I would like to take this character from L1 in BGEE to the end of ToB. So it would have to be something doable at each moment of the series, so that rules out dual-classing. It's also something I just don't have a taste for. I don't even like multi-classing, so I'm really looking for a single-class for the entire trilogy.
I've messed with just about all of the classes and kits in the Black Pits, and didn't necessarily do bad with any, but it's a very different experience than the actual game.
So I'm pretty stumped, and looking for advice from the wise veterans here.
tl;dr iPad mini player with some placement and casting difficulties looking for single-class to take through series.
Thank you in advance for any who take the time to reply, it is much appreciated!

As far as the issues with the Ipad, you may want to check the tech forum to see if others are having similar issues.
Backstabbing is kind of an art form. Getting someone behind someone else can be fun and challenging even for a mouse user, so I bet that Ipad would be even more so. Good luck with that. Best suggestion I have is move the zoom in as close as you can and then orient the character into place BEFORE attempting to attack. That might help a bit.
Finally, not really sure what you are looking for in the way of class request. But here's my best stab.
Fighter - pretty standard character. they don't get more stuff to do later on in life, it's just point and click. They hit stuff. That's just about all. There are HLAs (high level abilities) that can change things up, and items add some variability, but not much in the way of "Doing something" if you mean other than letting Charname charge into the fray and swat things. Paladins and Rangers are all variations on the same theme.
Thief - Well, you have trouble with backstab, so unless you like doing traps, that's about it. Thieves do get skills, which you presumably are already familiar with, where they actually add value throughout the trilogy, but that's about all. Assassins and bounty hunters are variations on this theme as well. Swashbucklers are more like Fighters than thieves, but they get some skills as well.
Wizards are where it's at for me. The vast and diverse number of spells available can make Wizards fun and challenging (in a good way this time) all the game long. And towards the end, they become insanely powerful. Sorcerers can be even more powerful, but require precise spell pics as you only get a limited number of choices.
Bard - These guys may be what you are looking for. They can be Devastatingly powerful, or so I'm told. They get a bit of everything in that they can fight and cast and, to a limited degree, some thieving stuff. Basically, you always have stuff to do with a bard.
Clerics, like wizards, are also very powerful. And add armor and weapons and they can fight as well as cast. Played correctly you can't go wrong with a Cleric.
If you have specific questions about any of the above (or the sub-classes) ask away. But without knowing where your interest lies, we can't make a blanket suggestion for you. Do you like casting? But don't know the spells? Do you like the constant ability to damage, even if it might get boring? Do you want to do a little bit of everything? Help us understand what you want Charname to be able to do.
Regarding the characters :
the warrior types are the easiest to play and they fill very well the spot of the party leader : they have high hit points and do lots of damage so they are consistently the best damage dealers. However, as stated above, their gameplay is quite simplistic and passive
thieves types are more support characters. They are very useful to a party but more outside of combat.
If you like your charname to be the main killer, avoid them.
Mage types are by far the most interesting but it can be a little bit overwhelming at the start, when you don't know the spells. Played properly they are both very powerful and very intersting to play.
Cleric types are in between mage and warriors. Their magic is not as impressive as mages but they are better in fighting. However they don't scale very well : they are good at the beginning of the game but at the end, their casting sucks compared to a mage and their fighting sucks compare to a fighter.
Regarding dualclassing :
if you dual very early in BG1 or at he very beginning of BG2, you will have almost no downtime :
for example a fighter 3/thief (to get access to helmets, slight boost in life and weapon specialization) would get his 2 classes at thief 4 (= 9000 xp = very early in the game)
Or you dual at fighter 9 (right out of the introduction dungeon in BG2). Just by learning spells from scroll you will get back to wizard 10 almost immediately.
Regarding multiclassing :
you really should consider it.
A fighter/mage is a great charname. Both easy to play thanks to the fighter part and very active/powerful from the mage side.
As for magic on the iPad, my brother passed BG2EE with only Jan as his only mage. Jan is a multiclass thief/illusionist, so he has fewer spells then real mages. You don't need that much arcane firepower.
Sorry, it's my "unintentionnal" dyslexia :P
But detect pockets is my favorite
In the soiler tag is an off topic dialogue i wrote concerning the new thief skills.
Kivan: "Alora, is their anything you can do to help us?"
Alora: "Yes, I can tell you that everyone in the enemy party has a pocket, but none of them has a lock."
Kiva: "How is that helping us?"
Alora: "They might have something in it."
Kivan: "Is there anything you can do about it?"
Alora: "I could pick a trap..."
Kivan: "Do that, it might help."
Alora: "I'll pick this one!"
Kivan: "Go set it then!"
Alora: "No can do! But I can set an illusion if you want."
Kivan: "What kind?"
Alora: "Something fun, like a poney!"
Kivan: "Why did I even bother?"
Alora: "Happy happy joy joy!"
Xan: "We're all doomed!"
Kivan: "I couldn't agree more brother"
