The death equation

I am thinking about what character I want to create and started with a Paladin (got 98 skill points) and right from the beginning he already dies in a couple of hits.

When my main character dies then the game is over, whereas the others can be resurrected by a cleric.

Does that mean the most sensible thing I to play is a cleric or cleric/mage

Then can leave the tanking to party members who can be resurrected by my main character who is the only one who can't be resurrected

Your main character can't be resurrected because he is you. You CN stay alive and help your friends though. There is a plot reason for this later on. Every now and then(~5 minutes) press the Quicksave button. When you die, load the quicksave and try again. Playing a cleric or some combination has no effect on this, but in bg2 at higher levels you will have access to the raise dead spell, be it you, or an npc cleric.

Sorry, one more thing. As you level up, you gain more hit points, and you will get better at the game, so dieting err, Dying will be less of a problem. Paladin is a very strong class, especially in bg1, were fighter types rule supreme.

There is some logic in the idea that the bhalspawen should be a cleric so he/she can rez. But you can't get high enough level in BG1 to raise dead. in BG2 you can get the rod of resurrection early in the game that allows any class to raise dead.

All low level characters are fragile. And early on, while you're still learning the game, just expect to reload a lot.
Generally, Paladins a very strong class and a good choice for your main character.

You will need to get better armor and a shield, as well as have the weapon you're proficient with.
I hope you maxxed Constitution and Strength. Dexterity is also good but you can fix it with an item later on.

Generally, try to gather a party as soon as possible and play smart. Don't just charge in every battle or you will get slaughtered.

Potions are your friend. Lay on Hands is also useful to give a minor heal.

If you go with the canon party, you will be fine:
    Minsc as damage dealer
Khalid as second tank or main archer
Jaheira as another tank plus healer
    Dynaheir as main caster
Imoen as Thief for traps and locks, secondary archer and maybe mage much later on.

Of course you could make the party you want, but that team is easy to gather very fast and is effective.

Try to do quests to level up, don't rely on battles exclusively. Grinding is not necessary in this game and not as effective as doing quests for xp.

Also save often and preferably, in different slots.

By the way, the Cavalier kit is probably the best for Paladins in BG1. Immune to many game-enders while still being very effective in BG2.

I think you should keep the Paladin. You will have better HP, better armor and better saves than a Cleric/Mage while still being able to heal and do good damage.

Not to mention that being Lawful Good, having high reputation and good Charisma, gives the best rewards and discounts at shops.

I cannot recommend the Cavalier enough for new people.

As numerous people have said, dying is pretty common for low-level characters. Death is always a game-ender for your main character, so save often and in multiple slots.

    Ways to avoid dying:
    1) Switch to Normal difficulty level on level-up to guarantee maximum hitpoints.
    2) Start out with a small party (1-3) so that you level up quickly and gain hitpoints.
    3) Invest in the best armor you can wear, and use a shield early on if you can. If you're a mage then make sure you have some protection spells available.
    4) Have someone who can heal you, so you start any combat with full HP. A cleric, druid or just enough healing potions can do the job.
    5) Keep healing potions and antidotes in your quickslots.
    6) As you level up, get items to improve your AC and Saves.
    7) Scout ahead so you know if you're about to face something nasty.

As @atcDave and @Archaos have said, Paladins (Cavalier kit especially) are great for learning the game, as they have decent hitpoints, saves and still hit fairly hard. Enjoy the game.

Another thing that I forgot to add.
In BG2 you will get one of the most powerful weapons in the game that is Paladin-only.

Sure you can give it to another Paladin, but it's more awesome if you have the honor of using it.
And it can be upgraded in Throne of Bhaal.

Also when Raise Dead becomes relevant and available in BG2, you get a Cleric/Mage very early on, as well as a Druid that can do the same.
