Anyone Playing Xenonauts?

the_spyderthe_spyder Member Posts: 5,018
I was just wondering if any of the BG crowd has tried out Xenonauts (the indie remake in the spirit of Xcom). Anyone got it yet? Anyone with a review yet? I will be making the plunge this weekend, but was looking for some early feedback.

It does look very like the original XCOM. The recent XCOM: Enemy Unknown was bloody good and has saturated my squad-level-turn-based-strategy-o-meter for the moment though.

I've been following the development for a while now. The main developer behind it all was a huge Xcom fan and has lovingly (apparently) developed along those lines.

I liked the Xcom: Enemy Unknown game, but found it oddly lacking. I did not like that the soldiers were in one of 3-4 molds that you couldn't alter. Nor the fact that it was a very small list of limited maps. Or that you were locked into certain weapons per 'Class'. it felt very (and no this is not me being elitist) 'Consoly'. I said in another thread that I felt it was 'Streamlined' in the same ways that Dark Alliance was streamlined from Baldur's gate. I might get flamed for this entire post, but I actually did get some enjoyment out of DA, but it was NOT BG. Nor was EU, the same as Xcom.

I have high hopes for Xenonauts.

EDIT: To me, 'console' isn't a limitation and there have been good games for the console. However, to cater to the wider audience, "Most" consoles in my experience tend to be more streamlined in control scheme, in scope and in choices and variability. This isn't a 'BAD' thing, but a different thing. I LOVE Dark Souls and the 'God of War' series. I love Baldur's gate and Galactic Civilizations as well. but I think that delineates the opposite ends of the spectrum between 'Console' and PC games. Sure, both could run on both platforms. But the market dictates that opposite ends of the spectrum dictate what platform is most likely to make the most sales.

Sorry to hijack your thread, but Dark Alliance 2 was AWESOME! I know it's not Baldur's Gate but it was SWEET!

I just got XCOM Enemy Unknown for $15, so if I like it I'll keep an eye on this.

Just to be clear, although Xcom: Enemy Unknown is a sequel (of sorts) to the original game Xcom, it is not the same feel or experience. There are elements of the old game in the new, but liking one does not equate to liking the other.
