Icewind gate compatibility

GrammarsaladGrammarsalad Member Posts: 2,582
I am a huge fan of icewind gate II mod (allows you to play bg II using the icewind dale II engine and most importantly uses the 3rd edition rules).

I would just love it if EE was compatible with this mod.

I understand that it wouldn'T work right out of the gate. It would be nice, however, if it wasn't too difficult for some clever modder to do it herself.

heck, I'm content to wait for iwd ee if necessary. I just wanted to put that out there

I doubt that will be any compatibility betwen the mods for the old games and the new BG:EE, the infinite engine is being remade, so by far it's not the same structure to hold old mods.

By the way BG, BG2, IWD, IWD2 and PS:T, they all use the same engine, the infinite engine.

Well, according to Trent Oster, if BG:EE and BG2:EE do well in terms of sales, there will likely be IWD:EE and IWD2:EE. At that point, the enhanced edition of the mod Icewind Gate can probably be worked on. As it is now, I must agree with @kamuizin : the mod will likely not be compatible with BG:EE due to the changes that have been made to the engine.

There can be mods that remain compatible, and I sure hope there will (especially my all time favorites aTWEAKS and Rogue Rebalancing), but something that involves such a major overhaul of the game engine as Icewind Gate most likely relies on resources that have undergone major changes in the transition from Baldur's Gate to BG:EE.

Anyway probally as soon ppl get a understand of the new infinite engine, be ready for a wave of fan mods.

This happens with a lot of games today and baldur's gate already have a legion of programmer fans doing this on the old game, so just imagine what they're going to do for the new 2012 BG game.

With luck many implements of the mods will be taken to the official game (as the TWEAKS that @AndreaColombo just speech a post ago, for game balance and ect...)

I don't have any actual desire for NPC mods in BG:EE but my mod dreams on the following BG2:EE? Kido (but with a better consistency on his history), even if the mod of the wicked never get a end the old BG2. But if i can't have my wish granted... ok, no problem, just put that crazy moron paladin Saerileth out of the game and i will be happy.

Edited to fix some english huge errors :)!

It's supposedly still betaish: main quest being playable and side quests sometimes loopy.

Well, the idea is to improve the UI and the code in general so that the ENHANCED ENGINEDITION OF BALDUR'S GATE can be used for possible future Infinity projects. If they do a good job at it we'd all prefer Overhaul's updated jewel, right? Wouldn't that mean that future conversions would just focus on, maybe, the rules?

    @Aliteri

I believe the OP is specifically after the 3rd Ed. D&D rules set.

True, but if the engine itself no longer matters for convenience, then that's yet another reason for a new 'icewind gate' - though it'd probably be called 'Baldur's Gate 3rd Ed.' .

I don't think Overhaul has any plans for making an entire new game using the Infinity Engine. I believe that Trent already said on twitter that if BG3 happens they'll be using a new engine. Infinity Engine can only do so much after all.

And Baldur's Gate 3 will only happen after a trove of enhanced infinity games. For monies and credibility.

I think there is already a mod created by fans who introduce the IWD in BG.

BG has a rich history that several MODs are designed to meet the wishes of the player to explore the world. I've heard of a "big mod world", which was classified as a megalomaniac. rs. but I liked the idea.

the possibility of playing IWD by BG is welcome, but if possible, influence the difficulty of the game (it would provide EXP and items).

I'm all for playing along the BG or IWD BG2.

Any new game we develop would have a new engine, but it would be in the style of the Infinity Engine - party based, isometric, pauseable, etc.

Ya know what would be fun? A module maker that uses Infinity Engine.

Think something like the Exile/Avernum Series with Blades of Exile/Avernum.

Or Unlimited Adventures to the Goldbox.

That way, we create our own 2.5e or 3e adventure modules rather than have to mod a current game.

I'm gonna make a new topic on this.

    That's what I'm hoping for.

well thats a philosophical question. See ship of theseus. one criteria biologists use--though not perfect--to determine whether or not creatures are conspecifics is generic compatibility. All I want to do is breed
