The Risen Franchise

I am just curious, having noticed that there is now a pre-order for Risen 3: Titan Lords (stupidest name for a game ever), about what people think of this franchise?
My own personal opinion is ambivalent.
Risen 1 and 2 are supposedly games that are all round kind of bad. The first game has an aggregate score of 77 on metacritic; which isn't horrible. It was a "bad" game with potential (according to the Internet), but probably deserved a sequel.
Unfortunately the sequel we got was Risen 2 which is the only pirate game ever that refuses to let you ACTUALLY BE A PIRATE. According to the internet it's mind bogglingly bad. Terrible gameplay, combat controls, horrific UI, uncanny valley-esque graphics, and an apparently lacklustre storyline are amongst the complaints.
Given how "bad" the sequel supposedly was; I have to wonder... how is it THIS game is getting ANOTHER sequel? and yet we can't get a KotOR 3 or Alpha Protocol 2 or Jade Empire 2 or hell a BG3?
Is it because of the potential of the first one?
I dunno. Was it that bad after all?
