Vanilla BG 1 character import

Hi Guys!
I've finally gotten around to playing BG:EE, but I want to continue on with the same character I had already passed BG vanilla with originally. I have the CHR file, but when I have saved that to the scripts file in BG:EE and attempt to import the character the game freezes and stops responding.
Please help!
