edited May 2015 in BG:EE Bugs (v1.3)
Expected behavior: Combat ends, combat music ends after a few turns.

Current behavior: Combat ends, combat music continues until resting or leaving area.

We'll need more information than this; so far we haven't been able to find a reliable test case, which is what we'd need in order to fix the issue.

This is happening for me too. I haven't been able to pin down the exact cause, but I feel like it only occurs when the last enemy is killed right as the combat music loops.

I can't quite reproduce it though. Another couple hundred hours and I'll probably be able to pick up the pattern. :P

Definitely a random type bug. I'm playing a round of no reloads and have restarted with a saved character outside Candlekeep a dozen or so times in the past few days. I'm soloing and it usually doesn't begin until I get to one of the two areas north of Nashkel. But it doesn't always happen either. Once it does though, it keeps happening when I enter combat, no matter what area I'm in. No mods, no edited character. Only thing I did was import from the tutorial so I could start with a weapon, and the save game I'm using to restart is right after Gorion's death.

Happened to me after the fight with Tarnesh at friendly arms inn. Combat music just went on until i have entered the buidling. i am at work atm, when i get home i'll try to reproduce it.

Same here. It just keeps looping until I reload or enter a new area. Random locations. Once it was in Beregost, once on the road, once at Friendly Arm Inn...

I have also experienced the same problem, though only twice so far: the first was after the fight with Tarnesh at the Friendly Arm Inn. I remember this because the music kept going even after I entered the inn, and it was rather distracting.

The second was in the area below the Friendly Arm, after battling the ogre with the girdle fetish. Once again, it was rather distracting to have the music playing while I sent my thief to scout out, so I ended up saving and then loading the game. The combat music was no longer playing when I loaded the game back.

I also have this on the Coast Way map below FAI. I killed the wolves to the west of the road and the music was still playing as I backtracked over to the girdle ogre. I have NPC Project and NPC Project Music Pack installed so thought it could be that that was causing the problem, but it looks like it happens on unmodded games too

Update: I took the girdle back to Unshey then returned to Coast Way and everything's working normally. Seems to be a very sporadic/random bug.

    @Dee
Until this bug is fixed, why not make a temporary solution to it and stop combat music when quicksaving. Since you can't save during combat, adding a script to stop the music instead of the current solution to reload should be quite easy.

I'd rather fix the root cause, to be honest. Stop-gaps in the code only cause more trouble down the line.

Finally.. ('cause the search function searches all categories)

    Windows, version 1.3.2053

Here's an idea: What if the combat music not ending isn't the issue but rather that the current background audio is set to the wrong one? If the background audio gets the value "combat music", you can try stopping it all you want, 'cause the game would still be playing the background audio.

I'm sorry I have no way to reproduce this, but after getting this effect, enter a different area with one of your party members and upon switching back and forth between characters you may notice that the new area has the proper background sound/music while the first has not.

I suspect that this issue occurs at a very "low?" level of music handling/switching/playback because:
This may not be related, but once I started a new game, entered Candlekeep inn and did the usual stuff for a while: looting, trading.. I may even have been AFK for a few minutes or ALT+tabbed. Once I realized I had to rebuild my character, I quit the game to main menu, and the main menu was still playing the inn music!

We've resolved this in IWD and BG2. In some cases it was content: if the area music definition was invalid, the battle music would keep playing when it failed to load the normal area music. In other cases it was an engine issue that has been resolved. Unfortunately, I can't confirm that those causes/solutions apply here unless we have a repro case.

If anyone comes up with one, please let us know here.

    Has this been fixed?

I've noticed two scenarios where I get the unending combat music pretty reliably. The first is when I fight Jondalar during the prologue. The odd thing is that I only get the unending combat music if I go around Candlekeep counter-clockwise. I don't get it if I go around Candlekeep clockwise.

Specifically, if I start a new character and:
    1) Talk to Firebead to get his quest about getting the Identify scroll from Tethtoril
    2) Talk to Winthrop and buy some crossbow bolts
    3) Go to the guard shack and talk to Fuller to get his quest to get some crossbow bolts
    4) Give Fuller the crossbow bolts
    5) Pick up Hull's sword and antidote
    6) Go to the barracks and kill Carbos (or Shank, whichever one's there)
    7) Talk to the Gatewarden about mass combat practice
    8) Do the mass combat practice once (I usually just clear the fog of war and let the temporary NPC's kill the illusions)
    9) Talk to Hull and get his quest to get his sword
    10) Give Hull his sword
    11) Talk to Reevor and get his quest to kill the rats
    12) Kill the rats
    13) Talk to Reevor and get the quest reward
    14) Talk to Jondalar and do his combat practice.

If I do those steps, in that order, I get the unending combat music every time. If I go the other way around Candlekeep (getting quests before completing them), I don't get the unending combat music.

The other situation where I get the unending combat music very reliably is the first combat after a new character joins the party. It doesn't matter who joins or who I fight, the next combat after someone joins always generates the unending combat music. The odd thing there is that I don't get the unending combat music if, after someone joins, I save the game, exit the game, restart the game and load that saved game file before the next encounter.

I've noticed one other thing about the first combat after a new character joins. There seems to be a script error in the dialog. After the combat ends, the new character says his or her line normally used for reputation increases, even though reputation hasn't changed. For example, Khalid will say "Gorion would be proud of your actions", or Xzar will say "Must we be so insufferably charitable?". (I typically play a good aligned PC.) I don't know if that's related to the unending combat music....

I've been having the same problem fairly regularly. It only started occurring for me after the most recent patch - prior to that, I don't recall having this problem. I think (though I can't be sure) that it occurs if the game is paused/unpaused in the midst of battle, perhaps at the time in which the music would normally turn off.

I am shocked, to say the least, that this issue has still not been resolved! It's been around at least since september LAST YEAR! Yet Icewind Dale is out. I suggest fixint bugs in one game before "enhancing" another.. Anyway: I made an elven archer, did all the quests in Candlekeep, even did the tutorial fight with the temporary party (which I usually never do) and after Gorion is killed every battle I'm in has neverending combat music. After the fight I need to rest, leave the area or save/reload in order to get rid of the blasted music! It's horribly annoying and is totally ruining the gameplay experience for me. This problem never occured in the original BG, at least not for me, so when I payed for the enhanced version I honestly didn't expect a new and annoying issue to surface.. Please fix this. I feel like I've wasted my money atm. Not a good feeling.

You've had more than six months to figure out the issue. So fix it.

Not to necro this thread either, but this issue is still an issue. Also, an additional nitpick -- in cases where the combat music DOES properly end, it does not end gracefully with the proper "outro effect" with chimes or a gong or whatever, like in the original game, it just dissipates and fades out within a second. Is there a mod to bring back this old behaviour? Or, speaking of mods, maybe it was a mod on my game that created this problem in the first place. Any ideas welcome!

As for reproducing (this latter bug with the outro not working), this happens with EVERY SINGLE COMBAT. Hope it helps!

@Endaar - it's still an issue because there hasn't been any new patch since the earlier discussion. The next patch (including bug-fixes) is due to come out at the same time as SoD is released.
