I am currently in the middle of playing IWD "Classic" with my brother coop over the Internet (using Gameranger). We are having MASSIVE issues regarding lag; most of the time this is simply annoying, but sometimes I have to play singleplayer for some bossfights, because it is impossible to win them while in coop (and reasonably easy in singleplayer).
If I understand correctly, IWD:EE has new netcode, so we are considering buying this version.
So if we export our characters from IWD and import them into IWD:EE, then what is the quickest way to get back where we were? Are there some cheats we could use? I guess if there were a godmode cheat and an instakill cheat for enemies, then we could run pretty quickly through the parts of the game we have finished already to get back to where we were.
Do you think that could work?
And does IWD:EE use a "direct IP" connection? I would not want to install any third party thing (such as Steam) to connect.
EDIT: Actually, we are not THAT attached to our characters, so if there were any other way to continue the game from where we were, with other (strong enough) characters, that would be fine as well.
only way i know of would be to import all your characters and begin a new game. You really would want to start a new game since you have new classes and new abilities for older classes. Plus new items in very early game, so you would really benefit from starting all over
IWD:EE (along with the other EEs) use beamdog.net matchmaking
Is it obligatory to use that? If yes, that would disqualify a purchase for me. I only buy DRM-free games using open standards not depending on external services etc..
Or is it alternatively possible to simply manually enter an IP to connect?
If not, does this also apply to the version they sell on GOG?

For those who are curious, beamdog.net uses the open Jingle protocol for matchmaking, which is based on the XMPP protocol. This protocol is used to set up direct peer-to-peer connections where possible, however the beamdog.net server may act as a relay when firewalls / proxies prevent a direct connection.
This protocol introduces no DRM. It is strictly used to simplify MP connections, not license control or analytics.

As Jalily noted above, yes. In the MP join screen, choose Advanced, then Protocol, then TCP/IP

I think we should commission Sam Hulick to write a "Beamdog has no DRM" song.
The software available on GoG is binary identical to the software available on Beamdog. Same thing. No DRM. Really. We promise. For sure. No fine print. Honest. Not even in MP.
I mean - don't put character files from the original Icewind Dale into the characters folder of IWDEE! This is not supported and it might crash the game. I really wanted to use my old characters in the enhanced edition as well.
You can still import and export files from IWDEE. I've also copied all my characters from BGEE to the characters folder and used them without any problems. They say this is not supported either but it worked for me.

well you can use characters you created in the original, by importing them, tried a nearly 10 year old file worked just fine
So how do i do that? because thats exactly what ive been trying to figure out for 15 minutes.
I copied all my old .CHR files into the new BG1/BG2/IWD character folders, went to create a new character and then selected import. Found the char file in question and imported it successfully.
The issue may be we are seeing differences in operating system and/or the various game versions (both original & EE).
IWD characters are definitely not compatible with IWDEE because all of the EE's work with a codebase derived from ToB. You may have some success in importing vanilla BG1/BG2 characters into an EE game, but save games from mid game will surely cause trouble.

Thanks a lot!

Or, as my kids would say "For real life"
The file formats are too different.

so the old files .SAV cannot be used too. i think i'll restart all over again
