My favourite game of all time, but nothing new? No new areas?
How much does the cut quest content add to the game?

There are some minor quest additions to EE (nothing fancy), no new areas, some BG2 kits (which are mostly unnecessary) and baldurized concepts like dual-wielding and wizard familiars, BG2 spells.
This also avoids the... Controversy of new content.
IWD 1&2 have no NPCs to join (unless you take Kulyok's mods into account). The whole concept of these games is around people building their own parties. The OP said he's fan of the original game, which probably means he's asking if the EE is and improvement of the vanilla IWD or just the same game with some polished graphics and kits. Which it pretty much is.
And there is also IWD Evaluation poll in which people give their opinion about EE.
-Zoom feature that totally makes obsolete the so-called "widescreen mod", which makes everything on the board look like ants scurrying about an anthill.
-Colored markers to play with, if one so desires a rainbow of easily identified colorful party markers.
-Player-commanded action icons on character portraits. No more wondering, "Now, did I give that mage or cleric the order to cast that spell, or didn't I? Why is he or she just standing there?" "Wait, did I just keep that closed-upon melee character fighting with ranged weapons, or did I order the switch to melee?" You can see on every character portrait exactly what each party member is currently commanded to do on the current round.
-I can immediately play a clean install with all the benefits of "BG2 in IWD" and "widescreen" mods, with no worry and no installing of mods, on any modern PC or other platform, including mobile devices, if I so desire, along with a few of the benefits of Tweaks, such as greater stackability of artillery. But, if I *do* want some of the other benefits of Tweaks, such as BG1 weapon proficiencies, it is completely compatible and easily installed - not to mention many other popular "house rules" mods like Rogue Rebalancing and Divine Remix. The same goes for BG1:EE and BG2:EE with regards to Tutu (needing the Degreenifier and worry about the Beregost crash bug), and BGT. NPC Project mods are available for all EE versions, with the IWD NPC Project being made available almost on the same day as release of IWD:EE.
-Any custom portraits will now be automatically resized from any native resolutions into the correct relative aspects. There is no more needing to create both L and S portraits in the exact 38x60 and up, unless you want to just get a zoomed-out frame for your L portrait and a zoomed-in frame for your S portrait. Custom portrait management for all the EE's is now a huge step up from the original versions.
-While I loved the original wood-grain interface IWD, there is a new snowscape-colored interface that has a lot going for it. And, there's already an interface mod that makes it look like a true snowscape, complete with dangling icicles.
-The introduction of BG2 character choices and kits, together with two new cleric kits, introduces a whole new level of replayability in party creation.
-There is the promise of continued support, consistent developer listening to feedback in this forum, and ever better updates and downloads for all of the EE's.
All of my EE purchases have been such a win-win, I have a hard time not being a Beamdog evangelist. Even when some of their BG releases have been arguably "failed" (ahem, 1.3 for BG2:EE, puh-leeze?) I have gotten so much joy and entertainment from Beamdog's efforts, including, and not insignificantly, this very forum, which has given me as many or more hours of entertainment and pleasure as the games themselves, that I will buy no-questions-asked any D&D related releases that they do in the future on general principle alone, voting with my dollars, my time, and my goodwill.
It's not about big changes, restored content, or new kits. It's about *playability*. Suddenly all these oldschool D&D titles feel like a modern game.
Especially if you have only limited time to play this is a huge factor. When I'm playing BG or IWD I want to spend my time actually *playing* the game and not managing my inventory because I don't have a fucking Bag of Holding yet... and that's just one example.
No save times, no load times, quick loot.... these are all features I don't want to play without anymore. It just saves you so much time that can spend on playing and enjoying yourself.
They're working pretty fast. Maybe we'll see a BG3 or IWD3 before this enhanced adventure is over.
The location is the actual sequel. I think that would be pretty neat.
