Romance for same gender ?

Hello everyone,

I wanted to know if there was a mod that allowed same gender romances ? (if I remember well, the romance cheats in bg2 allowed us to romance any companion npcs, so...) For exemple, all female companions can be romanced by a female player, same goes for male companions and male player.

I apologize if there already was a post about this specific question, I can't seem to find it...
(Also apologizing if it isn't the right section for this kind of post haha!)

The BG2Tweak Pack from Gibberlings 3 gives you the option to remove gender and/or racial requirements from the standard BG2 romances (among many other possible tweaks).

You probably know already but Dorn is romanceable by both genders while Hexxat is romanceable by only female characters. I guess the other NPCs just don't swing that way.

@Beetle Thank you, I wasn't sure about the BG2Tweak Pack mod, so I tried it, but apparently, it skips the Romance Cheats section saying : "this component is not available" for my game. I don't know if it's because I already installed some mods earlier, so I'm going to try without any mods installed and we'll see.

Woah, illicit acts ? Aren't you taking it a bit far ? Haha. What should it matter to you what I do with my game ? I'm just asking if anyone knew about a mod that allowed this kind of thing, since I remembered it being possible in BG2.

If you have the console enabled you can set a few variables to make romanceable characters bypass race/gender restrictions.

@Ainith, I think that Tweaks doesn't work to do this because it sees that it is installing into a BG1 game, which originally had no romances.

You can also edit those variables that @JLee provides with Keeper, if you don't want to deal with the console.

I also discovered a workaround of my own once. The goal was to play a male character who could romance any romanceable males. What I did was to create the character as a female. Doing so sets a base gender variable that cannot be changed, and that the program refers to when setting the romance match variables.

Then, I used Keeper to change the character's avatar to male, and I selected a male voice set. I had already given him a male name.

One of the problems with using this workaround is that there will still be a female-sounding caster voice for any casting incantations. Also, the whole world will see you as a female, leading to some pronoun issues in a few npc interactions.

The biggest problem with forcing same-gender romance through any of the methods that have been mentioned, though, is that the base stories are not written that way. Your romance interest will not only treat you as the opposite gender, but will use all the wrong pronouns.

Plus, we gay people have a certain way of talking to each other, flirting with each other, romancing each other, and sharing personal information with each other that is just...different, from how straight people interact with and romance each other.

So, forced same-gender romances feel inauthentic and phony.

Once, I got all the NPC Project romances going at once. I had Ajantis, Xan, and Coran all romancing my character. I started finding it very irritating. They kept bugging me to death wanting to talk about how they were falling in love with me while I was just wanting to play the darn game. Plus, they all have the same Bioware trope of "lover-as-psychotherapist" going on, except maybe for Coran.

And, I got really tired of being called "my lady", and being told what a beautiful woman I was, when I was playing a male character. There's a thing called "camping it up" in gay culture, where a lot of cross-gender jokes and references are made, but what Ajantis and Anomen do is definitely not that.

So, my advice is not to try to force gay romance with characters who weren't written for it. There are some really good gay romances available as modded npc's. My favorite for M/M is "Faren". I haven't checked out the F/F, but I think there are some good ones of those available too.

Beamdog's attempts to include same-gender romances are laudable, but Dorn doesn't do it for me. I can't stomach his evilness, plus, I think his relationship is kind of abusive.

I still sigh and smile when I think of Faren, though.

@BelgarathMTH Haha that was exactly my feeling when I romanced Dorn for the first time, wasn't really what I was hoping for. Anyway, thanks for the answer, I'll check out some of those modded npcs you're talking about, it might surprise me hehe! I'll also try to use Keeper, I want to try to make every character romanceable and try playing this way at least once!

Neera dialogue expansion has a same-sex romance component that adjusts Neera and Rasaad's dialogue to account for the player's gender.

You may also be interested in Delainy/Durlyle Same-Sex Romance Options.

The console commands in @JLee's post will not work for the official BG:EE romances.

@Jalily and @LiamEsler , I wasn't aware of the dialogue expansion mod. Thank you for working on and providing that for players who are of minority orientations. I might try it with Rasaad on my next run. It's nice to know the option is there now.
