Bit of advice needed re: dual imoen /thief in party..

So i am starting chapter 4 (cloakwood etc), and realised i need a thief for traps etc.. soo.. with imoen being a lvl 4 mage i dualled at level 5, herself and my CHAR went off on a little quest with Branwen... boldly slaying basilisks etc.. got her to level 5, and sadly, her thief skills have still not reactiviated.. i now need 20,000xp to get her to level up again.. Im not really sure what to do now lol... I dont think there are any high xp quests left (aside from continuing on with the main story)....

My party is: Raul (my protagonist Archer)
Khalid
Ajantis
Imoen
Branwen
Xan

I briefly tried picking up Safana, but she is level 5, and kinda useless.. so Id rather not dump out one of my trusty party to let her tag along for a chapter.. I'd also rather not charge into cloakwood mines with no trap detection (and know there is a spell, but then disarming?)

She needs to be level 6 if you dual at level 5. Always one level higher.

I know, I figured that part out when i got to level 5 :P Am i better off just charging ahead with the main quest till she levels again?

You could switch out Xan for Coran. Coran's bad at traps, but he can do it if you know about where the traps are and give him some extra time to detect. Or, you could get Branwen to fill up her second level slots with Find Traps spells, get them detected, and then Coran can disarm them.

Since Imoen is a mage now, you don't really need Xan anyway. But if you're attached to him, it should only be a short time longer before Imoen gets one more level, and then you can switch Coran back out for Xan. Just be careful where you leave Xan, so you can pick him back up conveniently when you're ready. Coran's bridge might be a good place, because Imoen might level again fighting spiders and wyverns before you get to the mines.

I actually found the whole Cloakwood area quite manageable without any trap finding. There's some annoying spider web traps you can wait out, and then a couple at the end boss. Plus two more avoidable ones early on. I always get stuck without a thief there for the same reasons and don't really miss one. Just make sure you have knock for some loot at the end.

@Hudzy, there is a set of lightning bolt traps on the third floor of the Cloakwood Mines, in a narrow corridor with a 90 degree turn, leading up to Hareishan and her guards, that is potentially fatal. Even if Charname survives somehow, it can easily wipe all five other party members.

On the bottom floor, just before Daveaorn, there are traps that release battle horrors. A lot of people like to release them on purpose, but if you have no disarm skill available, you don't get to make the choice. Personally, I prefer to deal with Davy without worrrying about battle horrors.

I know there are some other solutions, such as using potions of grounding to get past the lightning traps, but I like to save my grounding and insulation potions for Davy, and a few other places in the game where you need lightning protection.

It's so much easier to just use a thief, imo.

Knock? I have been searching for that, but i thought it was just a BG2 spell (would make sense that it was introduced in EE though...)... Any ideas where I could find a scroll? I dont think High Hedge sells them...

Never mind - quick google answered that question lol

@BelgarathMTH‌ Yeah, I just don't worry about those traps anymore. After years of playing now, I almost never take the route past those lightning traps and the battle horror traps are just more XP to me.

I will agree that everything is always easier with a thief of course.

    Ridiculous.

You've dual'ed Imoen late and without a backup plan for her missing thieving skills. You deserve the punishment.

It's absolutely okay to take Safana temporarily.

In my recent playthrough I also dual'ed Imoen again, and she became Thief/Mage 4/5 at beginning of Cloakwood after having helped Aldeth.

Are you sure you've not missed any doable areas you can complete before Cloakwood?

Coran's a perfectly fine replacement, as well as Alora, though she comes late without mods. Safana's okay too, though not much special going on for her.

You cannot get Alora before cloakwood. There is a mod that allows it though.

You don't meet her before Baldur's Gate. You can meet Coran in Cloakwood. Early enough as not needing to worry about web traps.

I believe the mod can move her to Gullykin.

Turns out Coran plus my CHARNAME ranger is fairly brutal! I like Coran, charming rogue that he is.... Im half tempted to keep him.. sacrifice having two mages (which i dont really need anyway), for having brutal death from afar with 2 longbows...
