Anti-aliasing?

First off, I don't know very much about how graphic engines works, so I might be saying something stupid.
But since it's not possible to create all-new sprites for the game, and they are quite pixelated, would it be possible to introduce anti-aliasing to the game? (Or does it not work with OpenGL?)
