D&D 5E campaign based on BG2

I'm a PnP D&D player and a DM and I'm about to start a new campaign with a bunch of players, none of whom have played BG2 so I'm going to plagarise like a boss! I'm not going to railroad them to the story but mostly just "borrowing" Athkatla & the numerous side-quests

Thinking ahead, there are a few snags. Imoen can't be everyone's sister and not everyone can be a Bhaalspawn (well, they could but it would get silly... and messy potentially) so I'm probably going to ditch the divine element of the story, perhaps just try and weave it in that this "Irenicus" has stolen someone dear to each of them* and seems to be experimenting on corpses a lot.

*I don't allow people to create orphans with no loved ones... it's boring, lacks creativity and roleplay hooks.

I might even run the game NPCs as 2 separate parties that the players could run into on occasion.

Party 1
Keldorn
Minsc
Rashaad/Valygar
Aerie
Nalia
Cernd

Party 2
Korgan
Dorn
Edwin
Hexxat
Viconia
Haer'dalis

Obviously, being PnP I'd thin out the combat considerably and if the players went off on a wild tangent then I'd just have to get creative (no different to any other pre-prepared campaign my players have ignored). I'd also start at level 1 in Irenicus' dungeon.

Any thoughts on in-game events that would not tally with this?

If they get off track just have Terminsel show up to guide them back.

Oh, and I want to play too.

It might be totally awesome to include any parallels to their characters.

Examples being like if someone plays a cutesy gnome/halfling chick? Throw in Alora.

Arrogant Drow Mage character? I think he and Baeloth might get along well.

Stoic warrior type? Valygar is there.

I think between BG1 and BG2 there's enough characters to throw parallels in for each main protagonist and maybe they can act as a mentor or friend to the PCs.

You could totally keep the divine aspect! Easy solution: NOBODY in the party is a Bhaalspawn.
Instead, each of the party members is a scrubby low level nobody, such as one of the dozens Irenicus has in his dungeon for experimentation, and they were freed during the Shadow Thief attack. You could still easily have the BG2 intro, just have Immy run in like "Heya! You guys loose too? I heard some fighting over that way, maybe there's a way out, gotta go!"

Maybe one of them is even affiliated with the Shadow Thieves, all the more reason for the party to be down there (hell maybe one of them is on their first guild mission as part of the attack itself).
