Had this running through my head lately, just got let go from my prior job unexpectedly but lucked into a better job and was only out for one week, working from home for more money.
Petty arrived on the tail end of punk, somehow bringing with him a hint of the Byrds, the Stones, Chuck Berry, and making it all palpable for a world that was about to be overtaken by New Wave. Though he is surrounded by mediocrity on most classic rock radio stations, he was far, far better than most of his peers, and can only be truly appreciated if you divorce yourself from that format and listen to him in isolation from your average FM radio station. Tom Petty is as much an American music institution as Springsteen, Madonna, Michael Jackson, Prince or nearly anyone else from that era. But he was always flying slightly under the radar of superstardom, even though his music warranted it (as did his sales). "Damn the Torpedoes" is one of rock's great albums, perfect from start to finish:
It's an odd coincidence, but Let Me Up, I've Had Enough is in the pile of CDs I'm ripping and archiving right now, and Southern Accents is one of the LPs in the next batch after that.

What's most remarkable is that his late-period stuff (which I would define as anything after his peak popularity with Full Moon Fever) remained very commercially successful. For instance, I wouldn't consider "Into the Great Wide Open" a great Tom Petty song, but it will be played at high school graduations as long as there are high school graduations.
The music videos of Klemen Slakonja are just golden. Especially that Merkel one when you know a good deal of German politics. Now that I think of it, I might just as well have posted them into the politics thread.
I've just bought a new turntable (Audio-Technica AT-LP120USBCE) so I'm looking forward to playing my vinyl records with a better sound. Especially looking forward to Dødheimsgard - A Umbra Omega https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aCFEETZX3SY&t=31s
It is such a weird album. Small parts black metal tremolo riffs over blasting drums, major parts weird and lingering almost jazzlike soundscapes. Topped off with a vocalist sometimes going overboard, his madness dragging you in. Superb and surreal.
I love Buddy Holly and I came across this awesome tribute to him on a PBS station a few years back. This song always made me smile when I was a kid and this is a great duet version of it by Michelle Branch and Chris Isaak.
@BillyYank I tried to quote you and leave out your video but failed epically so I'll just repeat your R.I.P. to Dolores O'Riordan and add my own comment.
Good God, she was younger than me. One of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard. 2018 is looking to be another bad year for musicians I love...
@Balrog99 I know. As I get deeper into my 50's, the number of celebrities dying in their 40's just freaks me out. And you just know it's probably going to be suicide, probably an OD of the pain pills from her back problems. My family and my wife's have a history of similar mental health problems, so every time I see one of these in the news, I get seriously scared.
@Raduziel Absolutely lovely. All I know of Brazilian music is Joyce, so it's cool to hear these other voices.

I will never tire of the various Zelda OST, especially the boss themes.

Nowhere is one of the best shoegaze albums of all time, easily in the top 5.
