@Wise_Grimwald could you tell us what mods you are using for BG1?

Here are mny logs, some of which I would not now install, and there are some that I regret not installing with this installation I definitely did not need another item upgrade mod, {The one where you get upgrades at High Hedge} I love the Tenya mod. It makes her far more interesting. Unfinished business is great as is Qusts and encounters. They provide added interest without unduly affecting balance. Some of the mods only affect BG2, Lucy the wyvern for instance which is an extra store in BG2:

Radagast, half elf avenger update 2

Forest of Wyrms saw Viconia killed by greater wyverns, even with good AC, her low hitpoints prevent her to survive critical hits with poison.
So I replaced her with Voghlin, and all was far easier, thanks to the bard hat and skald song.
Also, between stoneskin and throwing axe, Voghlin is safer than Viconia.
Spiders cave was cleaned thanks to grease, cloudkill and fireball.
The green dragon was killed with my usual tactic here : protection from poison scrolls, remove fear, dispel arrow when she wake up, some summons to held back her allies, magic missiles, and of course Corwin's arrows.
Temple was smooth, I was still protected from poison and fear so the half dragon wasn't much of a threat. Two mountain bears helped against the Neothelid.
For the Illithid party, I put some webs before the door, protected all the party with potion of clarity or greenstone amulet, and used Minsc with Spider's Bane to lure them. Then, they fell to potions of explosion and shoots from Corwin.

I surrendered the fort to the crusaders, and used dispel arrow against the mage trying to explode the bridge.

In chapter 10, I forgot to cast remove fear before facing the undead mage in Bloodbark Grove, and Radagast fell to a spook spell, and almost ran into the greater basilisk. Luckily, the spell wore out just in time.

I did all the coalition camp and crusader's camp quests, then proceed to the underground river.
I forgot to shapeshift to spider form, and so was webbed by a spider, and almost died with 7 HP left.
    g0x0p059a3v2.png
I was also trying to gain some achievements like All the Allies and All the enemies, so I spare the mage with the water elementals, let Juliann joins the crusade, and didn't put the baril of woosh.
The necromancers couldn't resist arrows of detonation.

In Dragonspear basement, I forgot than poisoning food also make Hephernaan coming, and soon I was in a desperate situation, only saved by webs, cloudkills and potions of explosion.
My runaway was a little chaotic, since even with invisibility and non detection, one of the mage detected us with a detect invisibility spell.

At coalition camp battle, I choose the worst choice for each battles, but three fireballs in a sequencer (thanks to the lich killed with the Secret Revealed) make short work of the trolls. Mages couldn't survived insect plague and arrows of detonation.

At Dragonspear, I refused duel offer for trying the achievement All the enemies, but I was almost overwhelmed by the number of foes (usually between the woosh and Ashatiel's duel, the battle is short so I was caught off guard). Minsc and Voghlin fell to a greater command spell and were killed, and Radagast also fell asleep with a command spell. Some summons saved the day by killing Ashatiel. I didn't receive the achievement since one foe flee... Juliann and Riga were also strong opponents.

In Hell, potions of clarity and protection from evil with haste greatly helped to slaughter the devils.
In the last battle, I somehow miscast my remove fear spell and Radagast didn't receive it, he then ran away during all the fight, while the party killed the devils, with the help of water elemental and ankhegs, and Corwin shot Beliphet (but Minsc stole the killing blow). Caelar joined me but didn't survive. Of course my screenshot from Beliphet's death wasn't recorder somehow...

Summary of BGEE and SoD :
hold, fear and sleep were the main culprits for dangerous situations. For next runs, I will double checked remove fear is active, use potion of freedom more often, and also potions of clarity against crusaders clerics.

The avenger is really versatile, able to do damage, but also heal, incapacitate, summons... Playstyle is really diverse.

Next update : chapter 2 and 3 of SoA.

One effect that I wasn't expecting was that with "Remove Racial Restrictions for Kits" you can no longer have an illusionist/thief or a fighter/illusionist etc. for a gnome. You get a mage/illusionist or a fighter/mage.

On the plus side, I was able to rolll my current character, a halfling thief/mage. :)

    @Trouveur
An interesting run. Congrats on getting to Amn.
@jmerry and @Grond0 thank you for your advice and encouragement. Do you have any insight on the issue of which difficulty setting to pick, given that were are generally experienced players who usually play on insane and I'm now playing maxed out SCS.

I wouldn't play insane myself. I'd try an easier level first if I were you. If you find it too easy you can easily play at a harder level next time.

    Journal of Nighthawk

I replaced Ugh's rabbit with "Little-little-ugh and then headed south where I killed Zargos Flintblade. Unfortunately when I killed Greywolf the final blow was delivered by Isra so I missed out on the experience. :(

    Journal of Nighthawk

Using Gorion's belt I fought a winter wolf and killed it effortlessly.

I then killed Vax and Zal followed by Caldo and Krumm.

I helped save 'Drienne's cat and realised immediately that it was a mistake. The experience was trivial and I might need to boost reputation in the future. However, what else could a good girl do?

Gnarl and Hairtooth followed by several assassins fell next.

    I then killed some Sirine.

Oublek died a hero's death saving a boy from a baby dragon. (I will keep shtum abou the fact that I had charmed him into doing that!) I gained a lot of gold and regained the emeralds in the process. A good result all round in my opinion.

@Grond0 thanks your post is very useful. So you are advising SCS on tactical, which makes a lot of sense to me. I really dig your point about trying to abvoid waiting around for buffs to time out. Something I am starting to experience as a bit of an issue on my current solo run on SCS insane. Do you have any idea of how bad the buffing is on hardcore?

Mages prebuffing can be fine tuned in the advanced settings, independently of the general difficulty slider.

@Trouveur Great! Hope this isn't a daft question but which file can I adjust that in? I presume there is some sort of ini or lua file for this?
  • jmerryjmerry Member Posts: 3,881
It's an in-game thing, actually. SCS adds a button in the game options for "Fine-tune difficulty", and then the actual decisions are made through the dialogue interface when you go back to playing the game. (The button sets a variable, which causes a script to summon an invisible creature to talk to you)

Radagast, half elf avenger update 3

Irenicus's charming hollydays club was easy thanks to spider form. For items import, I choose Arla's Dragonbane in order to give it to Aerie later, Falorain's Plate Mail for Minsc, and Helm of Balduran.
My first stop was to the Copper Coronet to recruit Anomen and Nalia, then the sewers to recruit Keldorn as a replacement for Yoshimo.
Then I did the Circus and recruited Aerie.
We then headed to the Umar Hills to recruit Valygar instead of Minsc, and solved the murders mystery.
At the temple, we recruited Mazzy to replace Anomen, skip the dragon and killed the Shade Lord.
with Radagast starting at 500,000 XP, all NPC were high level but the XP based foes were still low level, so no nasty lich among the undeads.

All was did without resting because of quests timers, and just after we went to De Arnise Keep before Nalia complained too much. TorGal needed some hit and run, but the keep was cleared smoothly.

Then Keldorn complains about his family, so I went back to Atkathla and did Keldorn's quest, Hendak and the slavers quest, solved the Bridge District murders and take care of the fallen paladins.

At last I could go to the Druid Grove, and Faldorn's regeneration couldn't save her from spider form with Draw upon holy might.

Next step was stealing the Efreet bottle before bringing back the rakasha's head. Having 19 reputation, I bought the nymph cloak and with 20 charisma then the Shield of Balduran, and it was Cult of the Unseeing eye quest time !

It allowed me to reach 20 reputation, so I did more shopping, like Robe of Vecna, Sensate Amulet, Girdle of strength, cloak of displacement, belt of inertial barrier, Vailhor's helm...

I did Mazzy quests, fought the lich in the gate district so Keldorn could use Daystar , fought the lich in the Unseeing eye area, and saw Mazzy oneshoted by a AHW. Luckily I could raised her.

Aerie learned all the spell scrolls up to level 6 I have gathered since the beginning of SoA, and only thing I wanted before sailing to Imoen rescue was Celestial Fury for Valygar.
I saw too late then I had forgotten to rest after doing Neb's quest, so with the lesser restoration from the ghosts, my party was exhausted...
Fight started relatively well, with insect plague, chaos and Mazzy deadly arrow killing the mage, but even with Keldorn's true sight, the thief kept turning invisible and backstabbed Mazzy. She tried to move a little, and activated a trap I had totally forgot ! She was oneshoted again, this time oneshunked !!! Goodbye Mazzy, at least we saved your sister...
    m7jk04diasx1.jpg
I won the fight, and Valygar took his so costly new katana, swearing to honor Mazzy.

Then I proceed to chapter 3, and hit level 14 with my druid just after cleaning Bodhi's lair. I'm now a Great Druid ! Beware Irenicus !
Last thing on my to do list before chapter 4 was the shadow dragon. Aerie with Robe of Vecna cast Magic Resistance, Lower Resistance, Doom, and Nalia cast Polymorph Other. The squirrel wasn't much a threat...
    7opwcayuou75.jpg

I'm now in Spellhold, I just reunited with Imoen, and gave her many scrolls to learn...

Time to escape this maze, and after that to unleash nature's fury on Irenicus ! Dynaheir, Khalid, Mazzy, I will avenge you, like a good Avenger (now a Great Druid actually).

    Gardi, Ranger/Cleric - Update 13

A companion quest gauntlet started, with only Anomen and Nalia missing - Nalia because her quest is bugged - it won't start unless you take her along in De'Arnise keep, and I figured I'd propably gain more XP by staying with 5 party members for the keep instead of doing her quest. Anomen because with Gardi, it would require progressing or cancelling the romance to start, and I didn't feel like waiting around for that.
We're overleveled for these quests, so they were overall pretty easy - starting with Rasaad:
    hs5n2h8os2rz.png
After that, we did the non-EE companions. Cernd and Edwin have some higher-level spellcasters to kill, but they failed to effectively deal with mass invisibility:
    ysutlab4wkfw.png
    1i8ppf37p7fp.png
    4v0dnyfqc8w2.png
I left Jaheira as the last non-EE companion, since her quest is by far the longest:
    a8n0i8zmgcpk.png
    n03imahapy9i.png
    26vn0qtrpwyl.png
As you can see she died during the battle against Dermin here, because for some reason, the SCS NPC optimization backfired, and she started in my party at level 1 with not even getting to our current experience level when rejoining. Very strange.

I have no screenshot for Neera's questline. This one is always quite annoying, especially the wild forest, the hunt for cats and even the battle against all the red wizards who constantly kept dispelling my buffs - though they stood little chance, I did get hurt by a lightning bolt during one of the battles. Finally, for Hexxat and Dorn, I lowered my reputation by getting caught stealing from 2 vendors:
    j3jwscme5bjn.png
Now I just have to remember to avoid the Umar Hills in the future.

Our first few illithids - but we easily have enough chaotic commands for everyone:
    nbil2vl13796.png
Hexxat's third quest is actually easier compared to her second one. The wizards don't do much before they die, their buffs aren't quick enough:
    rplez770ceoh.png
We did Dorn's first and second quest - when you travel away from the second quest into the scripted ambush, there is no travel time, so you keep all your buffs - which made this battle quite easy:
    rdkdqurxj0ma.png
We decided to side with Ur-Gozoth for the extra reward - with remove fear and chaotic commands on everyone, the demons can't really do too much:
    fggjionbl9jh.png
I decided to keep all the high level enemies such as liches, dragons, mind flayers and the guarded compound for after the Underdark and entered Brynnlaw, just killing the vampires with rage and iMoD+2 before stopping the session:

It's an in-game thing, actually. SCS adds a button in the game options for "Fine-tune difficulty", and then the actual decisions are made through the dialogue interface when you go back to playing the game. (The button sets a variable, which causes a script to summon an invisible creature to talk to you)

Hah how splendid. Well thats a nuisance off my back. Thank you much.

    Gardi, Ranger/Cleric - Update 14

    Hello, Perth.
    8dez1hiw1bjc.png
    Goodbye, Perth.

So, when we entered Spellhold, I soon learned that I had apparently installed the SCS component removing all items from the party in Spellhold. This is actually the one component I didn't want, but I must have not payed attention during installation and just pressed "y" and "1" for every single option without even reading them.

The reason I dislike this component is not that it's difficult (for this party, it's really not - we have tons of very powerful summons, and we can just sit and watch them kill our most opponents here) - it takes around 30 minutes to re-organize our inventory after Spellhold, because of a few bugs. The component is heavily bugged with items in bags, ends up removing charges (setting them to 1), splitting up stacks, un-identifying some green scrolls and other annoying things. Well, now we have to play with it. Let's buff our fire elementals with improved haste and some more spells and watch them kill a pit fiend:
    5fbwi0acu5gw.png
For the second level, because there's a beholder here, we used skeletons instead:
    siyk3jss5ig6.png
So, how do we kill Dace? Well, of course we go back to an old classic from our Belhifet and early SoA times, enchant weapon, to get the normal axes we have found to the required +3 enchant, and Hansi rages and kills him with improved haste:
    nivfyedxbzam.png
One additional rest is required, because we need some fire elementals and aerial servants on level 3 in order to take down 3 clay golems:
    764w0vkm419y.png
We kill Lonk before his pre-buffs fire, take Irenicus immediately to near death and wait for his dialogue to start:
    813gqyplmw73.png
Strangely enough, I almost lose a party member during the transition from Brynnlaw to the City of Caverns - Pietro gets turned into a squirrel, propably by a sphere of chaos, making him extremely vulnerable. Not sure what exactly happened, I only noticed it after the fact:
    c86964eze5ob.png
However, Gardi memorizes Dispel Magic and returns him back to his true form. Next up: The City of Caverns.

    Gardi, Ranger/Cleric - Update 15

After clearing the City of Caverns without any trouble, we wandered around the outer underdark areas. The demon knights are among the first enemies in the game on tactical (this happens much earlier on insane) where I really need to protect my buffs to survive, so we're giving SI:A and Entropy Shield to everyone (except for Hansi, who has to rely on his rage). Same is true for the balor, where we can really see the effects - Hansi loses his fire protection and takes tons of damage, everyone else is completely fine:
    cvagpu6q1vq8.png
Having picked Chain Contingency for my first level 9 spell with Andi, I used this one for some unavoidable direct confrontations with dangerous monsters such as beholders (with 3*ADHW of course):
    z2lth6yni3ee.png
After that, we used skeleton warriors and a planetar at one point to clear the place:
    8rk2bh38r29h.png
Due to elder orbs having death spell, we required a rest and re-summon to deal with the second one of those.

Lastly, the illithid city (restless) - I used oils of speed here because I saved my sixth level sorcerer slots for protection from magical energy here - much required against very big groups like this, otherwise they'd be able to instantly kill my weaker characters:
    nf3wgabnalwb.png
We did the entire place in one in-game hour as the oils of speed ran out right as we went to the exit. The elder brain died to a chain contingency:

I took a little break before starting ToB and started new run with Shadowdancer. Human because I was going to dual to mage in SoA.

Ridiculous class for BG1, game is not prepared for that. Against all reason I have somehow started this run on BGEET. Because of that Sandthief Ring works as in BG2 meaning I had 1 invi per day. I could backstab someone, use ring and backstab again, go into stealth and backstab for third time. Enemies cant even react. With staff +3 and pumping every point into hide in shadow/move silently my thief rushed through Sword Coast easily.

After oneshotting Davaeorn with backstab I decided on this brilliant idea to plunder his treasure hoard. Including these chests guarded by mustad jelly. Now jellies are kinda like beholders in BG2. Unless im playing some variant of fighter I tend to avoid them completely. Especially while playing character without crit protection.

I should have run when jelly was still alive after 3 attacks from stealth. But the jelly was near death and it would take only single hit...

In the end I was right. It took only single hit, for the jelly that is. 104 dmg crit ended my poor shadowdancer :D
My scroll of acid protection and potion of absorption in the bag were crying.
    oh nooooooooo!!!!

I feel this in my bones. I’ve never played a solo thief before, so I tried a half orc shadowdancer, figuring that 19 STR and on demand regeneration would be amazing.

I had no idea how awesome this class was. My goodness is it fun!

That being said, I can’t help but think how great it would be if I could use traps, and I keep on thinking about an assassin or a bounty hunter.

Im in the Cloakwood mines right now, so I’m not sure if I’ll get past where your run ended. I am using the dagger of venom though, which jellies are immune to. So I’m not going down that path.

    @Klorox
I'm having similar fun with a thief mage. The advantage is that I can use web + area effect spells. Just killed Drasus et al. :)

I found that the wyvern ambushes were easily dealt with by charming one, letting them fight each other and then kill whichever was still alive. Nifty! Will do a write-up later IF I kill Davaeorn. :)

@Klorox Damage wasn't as big as I originally thought, but still enough to oneshot me mercilessly. That just reminded me why I usually avoid them.

Im tempted to try dual like shadowdancer/fighter or assasin/fighter.

I just lured it away from the goodies using stealth to avoid being hit. I then sneaked past it to do the looting and left it all alone down there whilst I left. :)

    Very satisfying. :)

Full write-up with screen-shots to follow.

Currently time for bed. Just glad that I escaped unharmed.

    Journal of Nighthawk
I deemed that it was now time to take on the demons in the Nashkel Mines.
The enemies that I came across were merrely assassins, a few skeletons, kobolds, ghasts, and of course Mulahey himself!
    vbyydhqmo8vs.jpg
    oo6iqwhcscei.jpg

Upon leaving, there were more assassins Web, area effect spells and my throwing dagger sufficed. I returned for Xan and left him with Aerie without getting into combat. I then tookk Mulahey's seal to the mayor.
    g2ry7d9ln9le.jpg

When I came across Hafiz, he attacked me for no reason and paid with his life.
    jhgrdcljqe03.jpg

I took Samuel to the FAI for recuperation before returning to the exit of the Nashkel mines.
Nearby I killed a Revenant and Narcillicus.

    2y0v7y4rcu99.jpg

After getting into the bandit camp I killed more assassins.
    hp5flux0gbwi.jpg
    ivilsi8d8ycm.jpg

I then took on the bandits, web being most useful.
    r8kwz138kt9g.jpg

On Tazok's trnt I quicly dealt with two opponents before leading the others into a trap outside.
    hsvegn2l2oi1.jpg

In Cloakwood Seniyad and his cohorts walked into some skull traps before Seniyad talked to me. His cohorts died from their wounds. Aldeth wouldn't believe that they were dead. :(
    y3tnrmbdgjxp.jpg
    jkwtheggxy4q.jpg

We killed a few minor enemies before being ambushed by wyverns. I charmed the nearest and let them fight each other before killing the survivor.

    u6ms4vaq4iec.jpg

At the wyvern cave, I led them into an ambush!
    ksovuu42lxoq.jpg

In another ambush by wyverns I used the same tactic as previously since it had worked so well on the last occasion.

At the Cloakwood mines a combination of web and area effect spells worked extremely well.
    zb7qocjyxfee.jpg
    bhs27vm5f7p6.jpg

In the mines Tytus was killed largely as a result of backstab and poison.
    4etwpa1d6vi1.jpg

Hareishan was killed by skull traps.
    0w83m19ym6aw.jpg

Natasha on the otherr hand was backstabbed and poisoned as was an ogre mage. However since he fled, the killing blow was a fireball.
    q6wb83t31t9f.jpg

At the bottom of the mine skull traps killed Morgan et al and summoned monsters killed Davaeorn.

I used the monsters to kill Davaeorn' assisstant and to lead a slime away from the loot.

I've just come across this in conversation with Arkion. My character was created as chaotic good but is wearing an ankh of acceptance which makes her True Neutral, not good as Arkion is saying. Is this a bug?

Arkion doesn't care about alignment. That's a reaction check you're seeing - you need a less than friendly reaction to get his quest. If the reaction score listed on your character sheet is +4 or worse, he'll think you're dirty enough for his job.

If you're not playing a strict solo run, recruiting an NPC with low charisma to do the talking can be useful here. Quayle, with his charisma of 6 and placement just outside the city gates, is particularly convenient.

I suppose that I could have done that and dumped him after the conversation. The same with nemphre. She doesn't like the fact hat my character is female. Very sexist! However I have had the conversation with Arkion so it is probably too late. perhaps if I had removed the ring that boosts charisma it would have helped. Charisma is 7. I could have killed Firebead before boosting reputation by two at the mines and with all the reputation boosts in BG I could very quickly have got it back to 20. Too late for this game though, but good to know for future games.

Has EE changed things? I don't remember having this problem in the past even with paladins.
  • jmerryjmerry Member Posts: 3,881
At least in the current version of the EE, it's not too late with Arkion. The variable his dialogue checks isn't set by that initial rejection.

I can't say much about older versions; the only copies of BGEE I have installed are various versions of 2.6.

I discovered the problem. You have to go to Sorcerous Sundries first for the amulet/ring quest before he will ask you for a body. Why??? That's new in EE. I fetched the body and tried to pickpocket him. That failed so I killed him. I went to Nemphre and found a use for the girdle of gender. Once I was male, she asked for Arkion's amulet. I gave it to her. I then pickpocketted her for the ring and was successful, not so when I tried to pickpocket the amulet. I killed her and took the ring and amulet to Sorcerous Sundries. Success! I suppose that this was the best outcome. I got the experience for doing the quest. Experience for killing them. Acquisition of two mage robes. (Not really needed) and Baldur's Gate has two fewer evil mages. :) Why Ordulinian wanted to save them, I have no idea!!

It's not in the base game; if that's true, it's added by a mod.

Arkion's dialogue tests for a variable "bd_arkion_quest"; it has to be zero for his initial "Go away" or "I've got a dirty deed fer ya" lines. The former doesn't change the variable, the latter sets it to 1. And nothing outside Arkion's dialogue uses it.

Giving an item to a character (through script actions such as what's used here) sets the "can't steal" flag on it. No matter your skill, you can't pickpocket an item back once you've turned it in. Force was the only option at that point.

    Gardi, Ranger/Cleric - Update 16

I entered Ust'Natha and quickly got on the main questline, with the underdark party mostly killed by previously placed traps and the illithids and umber hullks dealt with via the usual buffs - we were interrupted by having to get Quile's brain - a couple of secret word + breach combos to dispel her mages, and the price was ours:
    k6mb35zmekna.png
Illuminata only had a few spells left - mostly defensive - so taking on the mage duels forced me to use her superior APR (for a non-fighter wizard) with scarlet ninja-to and belm:
    zzpm6kdihpgb.png
After a little bit more main quest, we had to fight our first lich - Deirex. We finally get (or rather: have) to use our full preparations for dangerous spellcasters, including not only spell shield + SI:A (or entropy shield/sanctity of mind), but PFME/PFF for everyone, plus all the things we've been using a lot already. Deirex used timestop while we spell pierced his spell protections - he renewed his protections via spell traps, gated in additional allies but didn't re-cast PFMW, so he died to physical attacks once the timestop ended before I even was able to ruby ray the spell trap:
    k182biychivq.png
For the invasion of House Jae'llat, I used my remaining spells and HLAs to quickly clear out the enemy ranks, and a remove magic to get rid of most protections against physical attacks:
    zp97wf7jotbs.png
The underdark exit was actually a bit scary - I was almost out of spells at this point, with no entropy shield left. Adalon takes some time to take out all of the enemies here, and meanwhile, Gardi actually got hit by remove magic and affected by a confusion effect that I didn't see coming (not even sure what caused the confusion). I was able to rectify the situation with a summoned deva casting dispel magic to remove confusion:
    pqehlddmhvtu.png
    Next time: Return to Amn.

@Enuhal You're brave to rely on Adalon... I usually just clear the Drow party out ahead of time for this exact reason: She's too slow. I seem to remember this being a scripted event in the original game, wherein she just took them all out within a few seconds?

Interesting - I've never cleared the drow party out myself, thinking that it would break my disguise, but I could easily do it either pre-disguise or once I'm done with Ust'Natha but before speaking to Adalon. I'm not sure, but I think Adalon generally takes down one opponent per round - maybe she was faster in vanilla, but I can't recall. It's possible that she can't deal with invisible opponents (at least she left the thief alive in my current playthrough, though I also had to kill 2 other foes because they ran out of her range). Ideally, I should propably just have rested again before turning in the blood to the matron mother and buffed before talking to Adalon again - best of both worlds, Adalon's help and a fully buffed party ready to deal with anything.
  • aldainaldain Member Posts: 325
Hehe, yep, the Mage there can be bothersome (and demons are almost always a concern unless everyone has ways to protect their buffs). I usually take them, along with the entire Underdark sans Ust Natha (and of course the Deep Gnomes), out before talking to Adalon. It's nice having literally unlimited time to work your way through the various encounters.
