A variety of tasks

Bored again, "Al" and cronies wandered about, looking for various odd jobs to while away the time. We had heard the Helmites were looking for a few part timers, but they ended up referring us to the Temple of Lathander instead. There they asked us to retrieve some ring or other that had been stolen, preferably dealing with the thieves in a non-violent manner. Korgan sulked all the way back to the slums upon hearing this.

He need not have worried; they never give it up quietly. "Al" tried to bluff the ring away from them by claiming to be from the Temple of Talos, which apparently had been the ones who hired them, but they didn't buy it and a lightning bolt came down from on high and hit ... Viconia? Talos must have bad aim. But we had recently pumped up her magic resistance even further, so she didn't even blink. They should have known better; they went down fairly rapidly. Korgan was immensely cheered up at this, saying that we were a better bunch than he had expected, and maybe he wouldn't have to kill us all after all. Gee, thanks Mr. Warmth.

[Note: my theory is that if a character has some innate power or ability that makes them tough, pump it up even further. So, Viconia got an item to increase her MR, Hexxat got an Ioun stone that gave her even faster regeneration, and me ... I get first choice of any nifty weapons]

Next thing that occurred was that some scuzzbucket Red Wizard cornered Edwina in the CC, and accused her of being the renegade Edwin. We all denied it, but the guy's dispel magic revealed the deception by turning her back into a him. We had the opportunity to just turn Edwin over, but considering that I had wiped out a whole enclave of the beggars, there was already enmity there, and no guarantee they wouldn't come after me next. Also, nobody tells "Big AL" what to do! Well, unless their name is Ness, that is. So we all piled into him, and overwhelmed his defenses by sheer weight of numbers. I must say though, I do hope this isn't the start of another vengeance crusade, like the one the Harpers waged against Jaheira.

We also found time to stop by my Keep (at last!); I made the crew stay in the doorway, since they had zero manners. I picked up a cool 10 large in gold, but blew 1500 of that to keep some merchants happy and combat a bandit problem. (I was seriously irked that we didn't have the option of going after the bandits ourselves. I guess putting down petty larceny personally is considered beneath the dignity of a powerful landholder).

Somewhat less poverty stricken but still bored, we recalled that the Shadow Thief guild still had some work for us, and indeed they hired us on the spot. And boy, do these guys need help! We stole everything in sight and none of them even noticed! Total amateurs. "Al" is somewhat obsessive about exploring, so we scoured every inch of the place before heading out. Other encounters included some rather overzealous trainers, a compulsive coat check girl, the Guildmaster's floozie, and some traitors in the making.

Time for a small break, and then onward, for the Glory and the Honor of the Shadow Thieves!
Hang on. Thieves have no honor, and there's not much glory in ripping folks off. Well, onward for ... personal aggrandizement? Whatever.

Going on, for our first guild assignment, we were told that shipments of stolen goods were being stolen. Hmm, that sounds redundant. OK, loot that our own thieves had pilfered was being redirected elsewhere by rival kleptomaniacs, and we were to put a stop to it. That sounds better. A mook named Mook led us to a small dock at night, where some goon named Lassal trashed the poor gal. He was apparently a vampire, but killed her instead of controlling her with his mind trick thing. Must have been feeling peckish.

So, the rival vampire thieves were behind the disappearing merchandise. Don't ask me why, but "Al" was mildly surprised. But being slow on the uptake didn't stop him from grabbing the chance to try out his newest toy.

Daystar rocks! POW! OK, everybody else was pounding on Lassal also, so he'd probably have done his gaseous form thing anyway, but this baby packs a serious punch against the undead. (1d6 damage per level of the wielder? Shazam!) Hexxat has recently learned how to use longswords, while Al has no skill in this at all. He is considering letting her use the weapon as a fittingly ironic measure against the rival vampire gang. A "Spy vs Spy" type of thing.

Next guild assignment: investigate two defectors. Pretty simple stuff; as usual, they refused to go quietly, so we had to put down everybody involved. Korgan loved it; I'm starting to wonder about that boy's mental stability.

Lastly, we were told to wipe out the rival vampire gang completely. OK, wooden stakes or no, we may let that one slide for a wee bit. There's a dude in the Radiant Heart that wants us to neutralize some fallen paladins, and that might be a bit easier an assignment for now, even with Daystar.

Yeah, and after destroying the vampire guild, you may not be able to return to Athkatla for some time, so don't leave too many loose-ends and unfinished jobs.

I've lost track: did you ever go back to talk to Valygar?

    Ugh; what's that about?

No! And I apparently can't get into that Sphere thing without him. There's a bunch of loose ends around. I never even got Aerie out of the circus, Rasaad and Mazzy are in Trademeet, I owe Firkrag a drubbing, Hexxat is stalling on taking us to China, there's a house in the Bridge district with Amn guardsmen who threw us out ... can't blame them for that, we're a motley looking crew but I wonder what they're guarding. Will more Red Wizards come after Edwin? Etc. etc.

It's the final assignment that starts Chapter 4 but only when you turn the quest in to Aran Linvail. After the quest you won't get back to Athkatla until Chapter 6. And the 4th and 5th chapters feel like an eternity.

Edit: @joluv is right. Didn't remember that since I always leave some quests to chap 6, and only do thief-quests when I'm ready to go.

You don't have to leave Athkatla immediately after clearing the vampire lair. It's just that when you report back about it you get asked whether you're ready to leave yet. You can just say no and go do more stuff for a while.

Ok; Sounds like I will eventually have to decide on a core group to take along then. I'm tending toward favoring the good guys, although some of this current bunch have advantages. Love that Drow MR. And there's at least 4 NPCs I haven't tried out yet. And some stuff to construct. I have instructions for making some weapon that Conan apparently used; or at least someone from Cimmaria, since it's named after Crom.

You can only make Crom Faeyr in Chapter 6, since one of the parts is only available in chapter 5. So don't waste much time thinking about this yet.
