Drinking a potion in inventory vs quickslot

So I drank a potion from my inventory, I heard the gulp sound, but the potion number did not decrease. I then passed it around to my party members, and it still did not decrease.

However if I use it as a quickslot item, it does.

Does the effect only work if I use it as a quickslot item?

It's because the game is paused on the inventory screen. The potion isn't drunk until the turn plays out, and if you move the potion while still paused to someone else, it never actually gets drunk.
