Black screen when moving between screens

in IWD:EE Bugs (v1.4.0)
Every time I change screens - whether going into a building or pulling up a vendor's inventory - my screen goes black and I have to alt-tab out and back into the game to fix it.

I did search for this issue before posting, but I imagine maybe I used the wrong keywords, so if anyone has a fix already, I'm all ears.

This is on a Windows 7 PC.
