cannot use melee weapons

I'm not sure why, or when this started happening, as I use the Ranged AI so have been killing quite successfully (also, CTRL+R!). But I notice that even if the enemy is right in front of the characters, they just stand there taking hits even if they have switched to their melee weapon.
I installed the BG2 Tweaks Mod, uninstalled it, and still nothing happens. I've downloaded the game from Steam, so I don't know if there is a patch somewhere for this?
