Custom portrait color depth?

I just tried playing BG2 with a newly made custom portrait, and the game couldn't see it.
I sighed, exited the game, went to check the portrait file.
It was in the right spot, the right file type (bmp), the right sizes, correctly named... "Oh come on, Game," said I. I"t's all fine! Why can you see all my old stuff but not the new one?"
"Donno, just can't", said the game.
I sighed again and started poking about, and finally found what the problem was. 36 bit color depth was too much for the good ol' Game to handle. It graciously accepted the portrait after I saved it as 24 bit.
So I'm wondering, will BG:EE able to handle portraits in higher(deeper? :P ) color depth? With all the graphics enhancements done, it shouldn't be a problem, right?
