Enemies not attacking my familiar on sight?

It's been a while since i've played BG with a mage type character, but recently i noticed enemies not attacking my imp on sight. They do fight back when they're attacked though.
I had my imp polymorphed into a spider for example (polymorph ability at character level 1 seems OP by the by, but thats a whole other discussion) and walk into a group of hobgoblins without being attacked. Only the victim who i explicitly attack would engage in melee with the imp.
Is this normal behaviour?
