PS:T Mage close combat
The title sounds like an oxymoron I know but fact is, you are going to be in fisti-cuffs with the N.O. as a Mage (if you play a Mage) whether you like the idea or not.
How it works;
You have a number of assigned awards (stars) in weapons that you can utilize throughout the game. Problem is, you can only assign them as a fighter. Other problem is, you cannot assign them yourself.
In PS:T, you must be TRAINED to use weapons by characters you meet throughout the game. And they won't train you if you are a Mage. You therefore need to convert betwixt fighter and Mage throughout the game.
Basics:
You start as a fighter and have a star in Fists and Edged Weapons. You can learn other weapons, axe and hammer for example and if you remain a fighter for the game, both of these are excellent to learn with incredible weapons available for purchase or finding.
If you elect to become and stay a Mage however ( the focus of this thread) only EDGED WEAPONS ( think knives) will be available for use, that's it.
Early in the game, a person in the Hive will train you to become Proficient in knives (2 stars). It is worthwhile to do this before becoming a Mage.
Later in the game, after a few levels, you will meet someone who will train you to MASTERED in knives, giving you 3 stars. To do this though, you must become a fighter for the training. Dak'kon will convert you (just ask via dialogue icon from right-click interface). After you have learned this skill, Dak'kon will train you back to Mage
(same interface dialogue) and you will still have 3 stars in knives.
Even later, you can be trained in 4 stars in knives (as a fighter) from a different character, with same swap betwixt professions required to do so.
Now, to do this, you will need to raise your character's Fighter levels to the appropriate level for said training. This is easy to do later in game, when you are being awarded a ridiculous amount of xp for rather simple quests.
"Why do this? I'm a bloody Mage!"
Well PS:T is tricky when it comes to combat. You will notice enemies getting in your face a LOT more frequently than both BG and IWD ( because of the interface, note this sort of puts a damper on Nordom's usefulness as well). Sometimes, you just won't get that spell off. It's then time to yank out the blade and get Dexter on their arse.
Also, why waste spells on simple enemies? Gut the fools.
So, highly recommended you take the effort to upgrade your Mage's use of knives ( and there are some cool one's in the game!).
