Nigh on Impossible Fight!

I've just been given the quest of infiltrating the Iron Fist but, before I complete it, I want to do everything else in Baldur's Gate. However, I've hit a bump in this plan. There is only one thing I have yet to do and that is the Degrodel quest chain. When I enter his house I am immediately attacked by a group of monsters (Invisible Stalkers, Doom Guards and a few others) and, though I've tried it a billion times I just can't kill them.

I've used all the spells and tactics I've got (including multiple creature and monster summons) but it's apparently in vain. If any of you can give me advice on this fight it would be highly appreciated because I'm stumped! :)

One tactic I use is to send in my tank, buffed, hasted and with plenty of healing potions, and run him right into the far NE corner so that the nasties can only get at him one at a time.

Divide and conquer as best you can.

Also don't be afraid to use your potions and wands - potions in particular can turn you into an unstoppable force for a limited amount of time.

I usually fight this battle in the SE corner, i.e. just to the right of the entry point. There's time before the enemies arrive to get your party positioned with the back row by the wall, and the front row towards the enemy. Then just wait for the enemies to come to you, don't expose your rear by charging out of your defensive position.

It's a good place to have Stoneskin on your Mages (and Iron Skins on your Druid if any), since one or two of the Invisible Stalkers will usually attack at the side or back of your party. (If your Mages haven't got Stoneskin yet, I'd recommend fixing that before tackling Degrodel.)

Buff the party fully before entering - Haste, Protection from Evil 10' radius, Chant, Bless, Defensive Harmony, all that good stuff, plus whatever relevant individual protections you have.

(If someone still seems too squishy, then go invisible and hide in a corner.)

Make sure that everyone is equipped with magic weaponry (including magic ammunition for ranged weapons). Have a Mage cast Melf's Minute Meteors, that's a good weapon for this battle.

When one of the Invisible Stalkers materialises right next to one of your back-row, which one of them usually does, then have your back four concentrate fire on this enemy until dead.

what belts are you wearing? if you have the golden girdle, make sure that character is being attack by the doom guards ( the guys with the flaming weapons) and for the helmed horrors, make sure the character they are attacking has the girdle of bluntness, just those girdles themselves will give those enemies some big penalties to hit,

and if you have a couple level 4 cleric spells, bust out protection from evil 10' radius and a defensive harmony ( watch out for defensive harmony's short duration though) and of coarse you will want haste,

and if you are really struggling what you can do is either cast the mage spell protection from fire ( found at high hedge) or the level 3 cleric/druid spell protection from fire on your tanks, and have your tanks lure all the baddies to a corner of the house that is out of harms way, and start blasting them with wands of fireballs

( note: if you have items of fire resistance they will stack with protection from fire spells to a total of 127% which means you will actually heal damage from the fire that is being caused)

    Fighter
    - passport ring, hem of defense, potion of fire resistance
    - full plate, ring +1 or 2, cloak of balduran
    - if he uses scimitars, get drizzt's (+2 AC is great)

Get aggro, move away from casters
    Fireball
    Fireball
    Fireball
    Profit

Trying to remember if the Doom Guards are the ones with the flaming swords... if so you can dispel magic those away from them.

My usual methods is buffing well (potions of strength and heroism for the fighters, stoneskin for the mages, prot. from evil 10" radius, chant, bless, haste), enter and retreat to the SE corner, then cast Malison and Web to where the Doomguards are coming from. Web will slow their approach and not all will manage to save at the same time so this gives you a divide and conquer, they will get at your party piecemeal. Finally, use slow and glitterdust to hinder their melee abilities. Let your fighters take them out, but stay out of the AoE of your your own web (turn of the AI to avoid them runnung into the web).

For the Invisible Stalkers, use detect invisibility then take them on in melee with secondary melee characters (clerics, thieves, multiclassed mages).

What you also need to remember is that fighting them isn't necessary. You can get to Degrodel using stealth, sanctuary, invisibility etc. Just remember that you need to get out again. Stealth is no problem, you just hide again. However you will need to cast sanctuary again after speaking to him, likewise with invisibility.

If the EE version is the same as vanilla, you will be attacked AFTER giving him the helm. I don't. I keep it.

Yes, that's also true in EE.

Most of us want the Helm, but it's a more profitable tactic to give the Helm to Degrodel for the quest reward, and then kill him (first!) when his undead minions attack. He drops the Helm when he dies.

It's exactly what i always do, and it works even on RP side if you are good aligned

Generally, in BG1, you can solve nearly ANY fight if you save your potions and wands for when you really need them. If that fails, rearrange and experiment with some spells on your Cleric and Mage. But there are VERY few situations in the original game that can't be taken down with Bless, Chant, Prayer, Haste and some stockpiled wands and potions.

I go at night so no passers by and lure them outside.

Webs and fireballs do the rest...............and running around.

Take your tank and give him these:

Protection From Fire potion & ring (or Protection From Fire spell or you can swap one of these for Resist Fire/Cold)

    Potion of Invulnerability.

Arrow of Detonation (save at least one of these for the Final Battle!).

    Done.

P.S.: If your tank's Dex is not 18, put a Potion of Agility on top of this list. The AoD never misses, but the AC boost is necessary.
