NPC Epilogues and BG2 Transition

CommunardCommunard Member Posts: 556
I'd love to have some epilogues for what exactly happens to your companions at the end of BG1, at least the ones who don't come with you to Irenicus' Dungeon. What happened to Xan? How did Edwin end up working for the Shadow Thieves? And so on and so forth. In fact, I just like a general Epilogue detailing the return to the Duchal Palace, maybe ending with you getting jumped Irenicus' agents. It's a minor cosmetic thing, but I think it would make the ending a lot more satisfying.

Yeah totally. This goes along with what I said in AndreaColombo's thread about wanting the two games to be bridged. It definitely needs to end with Irenicus jumping you and one final impossible fight. It would definitely make the ending of Bg1 and the start of SoA a LOT more fun if there was more continuity.

I haven't played unmodded BG(Trilogy) in years but I'm pretty sure even in vanilla dialogues it is mentionned at some point that the shadow thieves were implicated/hired in your capture for Irenicus, and the BGT transition shows that clearly. Irenicus wouldn't bother himself with such petty task of capturing weaklings such as your group at the end of BG1. If there is to be a transition that is the way I'd go, probably without the name dropping BGT does.

Epilogues seem like a good idea but what of characters that return / make an appearance in SoA? Skip their epilogues? That would probably spoil it for new players. There is also the case of mods that make BG1 NPCs return as joinable characters. BG1 is clearly not the end of the story so I don't see the need for epilogues at this point.

That's what I was thinking actually, except I would prefer a narrated epilogue rather than just going through the motions - if the same thing is always going to happen anyway it might as well just be a narration. That way it leaves room for a larger gap between BG1 and BG2

The only people that would be an issue for woule be Khalid, Jahiera, Minsc and Dynaheir. All the others can have an epilogue which ends with them travelling south for some reason, perhaps even to look for the disappeared CHARNAME. As for those four, I would have them go their seperate ways for a while before reuniting with the PC to investigate something or simply to catch up on old times. The epilogue would end with them having arranged to meet outside Baldur's Gate. The issue of how to link up the games if you don't have them in your party could perhaps be solved by them seeking out CHARNAME as part of their duties as Harpers/Agents of Rashemen. The only problem is what to do if one of them has died...

    Xan's Epilogue:

"I'm dying," croaked Sarevok as the party surrounded his dying body.

    Afterwards....

"So Sarevok is dead now, Charname, you stabbed him through the heart", said Xan pointedly.

"We're all doomed ", Xan said helplessly, "I want to know what we are doing later", Xan said belatedly.

"First I want to explain what happened to the Grand Dukes", I said briefly.

    "...And then?" Xan questioned

"We will Ignore the first three turns on the way to the Blushing Mermaid," I said forthrightly.

    "...AND THEN????", said Xan

"I need to buy some stolen goods", I said offensively

    "AND THEN????" Xan asked.

So then Xan was killed by Charname.... *Fade to Black*

(I'm trying to say I think we don't need to know every "AND THEN" before BG2. Xan's fate should be discovered in BG2 like the other characters not at a tacked on the end of BG1 epilogue)

@smeagolheart I don't really understand your point, are you saying that it's inevitable that an epilogue will be badly written? Because these are the same guys we're trusting to write lots of new dialogue and a new NPC, so...

I always found the ending of BG1 a bit abrupt, and though some mods partially alleviate this, a lot of improvements seem possible, such as:

    - The option to keep on playing after defeating the main adversary of BG1, and get to experience some of the immediate aftermath of the outcome; and then eventually create a new final save for export to BG2 when you want to do so.

    - A more cohesive and detailed BG1/BG2 transition. Surely there's room for a fair bit of in-game adventuring between the current end of BG1 and the start of BG2.

    - More information on what happens to the NPCs you encountered during your travels in BG1. What do they aim to do now that the iron crisis appears resolved?

On a similar note for the future, I would like to see considerations for BG2-ToB along the same line - I would especially welcome the ToB and BG2 maps to be connected so you could go back to BG2 areas (by means other than console usage) after starting ToB. Failing that, anything that can make ToB less linear.

I think a request along these lines has been made already.

Something like an Epilogue, that maybe can be implemented after Chapter 7 and and connect you to BG2, It could be great

Yer i think that would be a great idea, heaps people more understand what happened between 1 and 2

How about an epilogue about how Charname and his friends were celebrated as heroes?

@Tanthalas not really sure with these, the first two are more NPC specific, the first one is the oldest of all of these threads:

[Request] More BG1 NPCs in BG2:EE; ex party members start with you
[Request] NPC transition from ToSC to SoA
    NPC Epilogues and BG2 Transition

I guess they're sort of different, still, thought you might want to merge them.

EDIT: This discussion is also similar, is about the NPCs remaining consistent between BG1&BG2:
Carry over NPCs' stats from BG1 to BG2

Didn't merge everything because they seemed different.
