Maintaining formation in multiplayer

Sorry if this has already been answered somewhere, I didn't see it.

I am playing BG2 with a friend in multiplayer. Until yesterday I thought you couldn't click on the select all button in the lower right and have it apply to my friend as well. That is, I and the rest of the party would maintain a formation, but my friend was never included and would have to move separately or click on my portrait to follow.

However suddenly yesterday she started moving with the formation as well. Is there something I've missed that allows that to happen (or, it suddenly occurs to me, did I forget to give her control of her character in the join screen).

    You probably both have control of her character.
