If the person holding the fateful slippers is out of range, the Lich still responds agreeably and asks for the slippers. Unfortunately he does not actually take them, since the holder is too far away, and both parties stand around awkwardly, waiting for the other to make a move.

Also it doesn't grant quest XP.
