Rest automatically during long trips on the region map

Did it ever bother anyone else that when you go somewhere on the regional map that is a day or more away that your characters are fatigued as soon as they arrive? Can we add 8 hours to the travel time and have the game act as if you rested on the road? There is already a random encounter chance when travelling: 'You have been waylaid by enemies and must defend yourself!' so you aren't avoiding what might happen if you rest manually on your arrival.
I remember this was a criticism in a magazine review I read for BG1 way back in the day, and it still works that way.
Can this be changed? Perhaps as a toggle similar to the 'heal completely on rest' toggle in case players want to use the old way?

It would make a lot of sense to me to make it so that you rest when travelling (say your fatigue threshold is 8 hours, then rest at every 8 hours of travel), with everything it entails (i.e. additional ambush chance when resting, resting adds to total travel time, etc...). If not default behaviour, it could at least be made optional on either the world map or gameplay options.
