Do I need to complete the Nashkel Mines with K&J and M&X in order to keep them?

I currently have Khalid and Jaheira, and Montaran and Xzar in my group. To my understanding their "to Nashkel" quests are completed when I take them to Nashkel and speak with the Mayor. At that point, can I take them back to the Friendly Arm Inn and leave them there, before completing the Nashkel Mines?

I recall a time when I completed the mines without them, and they disappeared from where I had left them. I'd like to collect as many NPCs as possible, and don't want either group to disappear, but I would also like to pick up some other NPCs for leveling before heading off to the mines.

    AFAIK once you recruit them, they're never going away.
