Blacksmith/Workshop

The main reason for this request is that I would like to see gems be given more use than just possessing monetary value. So many gems and you can only sell them! Excluding Cespenar in ToB, gems should have better uses so why not use them to upgrade weapons/armour/items etc.

This would make BG so much more customisable than ever!!!

there is blacksmith in Beregost (BG1) and there is another in BG2 in Athkatla and if I remember correctly he can even upgrade some weapons, or was it a mod?

I believe it is a mod @Grieg... CoM Encounters or something (I guess Dark Horizons now). Other mods do similar things.

Gems, trinkets and baubles are nice, shiny things with no other practical function. I don't mind that even here the only thing you can do with them is to buy other (useful) stuff with them (or from the gold you get for selling them). And if you have so much money that you don't need any more, well, you can still keep them in a container and can have the "Look at me, how rich I am with all these gems!" :)

Also, as @Hertz said: No random drop crafting please! No "collect X amount from this random drop!". I even have problems with BG2, when I have to keep a list of all the gems I will later need in quests, so that I don't accidentally sell them

HAHA, I suppose so. I just liked the crafting in BG - Dark Alliance 2, thought that was fun but yes...the original BG series already has plenty of enchanted weapons, armour and items.

There is that too. I'm going on a BG1 run in Tutu with all 6 party created by me, and I have spare +1 weapons and armor, and spare scrolls and potions, coming out my ears. I've stopped picking up certain gems and jewels because they're just inventory trash. Any new weapon I can craft with gems would have to be better than the stuff I already drag to the market and sell off ... and if you think about it, it would have to be worth more! And money is NOT tight by chapter 5.

I wouldn't mind seeing some of the more pricer gems, say a select few that sell for over 500, could be used in upgrading a regular +1 to a +2 weapon/armor and so on, a specific gem for a specific item; gems needed could drop around the same time/place you'd have the opportunity to get a better item. This would just be an alternative.

That depends whether you see crafting as a way to make money (you sell the upgraded weapon for more than the components sell for separately), or as something to spend your money on (you sell the weapon for less than the cost of the components, but you get a better weapon).

Good idea :) gems like rubies, sapphires and emeralds fitted into the pommel of swords we have made ourselves would be a nice thing. But steel or iron as well as leather is needed to make blades... So one would have to collect that as well somehow, or else it would make little sense.

We're heroes here, best place to get things for making swords, a swordsmith!

We could introduce mining for metals and harvesting skins for leather off of animals while we're at it, like in Skyrim...
