Characters losing experience

in Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition
I am doing SoA, and my characters somehow are mysteriously losing experience points, I don't know why but some characters are suddenly behind 2 million experience behind others. Got everyone early in the game so experience gap should be minimal.
