Game crashes at character import/generation stage

The game recognises my saved BG1 games and offers me the option to import my character from one of those but when I click on "import" the game crashes.

Equally, when I try to generate a new character the game crashes as soon as I try to assign a gender.

N.B. I've downloaded both the entire SoD download and the patch for my existing Beamdog version of BG1.
BG1 seems to run OK with the new UI but the portraits are all screwed up.

Can anybody help me before I go completely insane?!

Edit: BG1 crashes when I try to start a new game. So now, after spending hours and hours downloading, I can't start a new game in either BG1 or SoD.
