SoD (and patched BGEE) crash at charater generation/import stage

SoD recognises my saved BG1 games and offers me the option to import my character from one of those but when I click on "import" the game crashes.
Equally, when I try to generate a new character the game crashes as soon as I try to assign a gender.
N.B. I've downloaded both the entire SoD download and the patch for my existing Beamdog version of BG1.
BG1 also now crashes when I try to start a new game. So now, after spending hours and hours downloading, I can't start a new game in either BG1 or SoD.
