Game crash, right at the beginning

gt27mustanggt27mustang Member Posts: 17
I created a new character in SOD and right after the opening cutscene, when the converstaion with Imoen stops, I have just enough time to see Dynaheir cast stoneskin, and then the game freezes. No amount of ctrl-alt-delete will fix this, I can't even shift to desktop, I have to manually power off my computer, and restart. Its done this 5-6 times in a row now. I red some people have trouble when they save, on MACs, but I don't even have to do anything, the game will just freeze 4-5 seconds after I have control of my characters. If I immediatly go to the inventory or character screen, I can fool around and it doesn't freeze, but as soon as I go back to the game screen, freeze time!
Any body has seen this?

I was probably one of the few people who never experienced ANY game breaking bugs in any Enhanced Edition games, so I'm disapointed that I can't play the one that I've waited for the most. I don't play with mods btw.

Ps: This is my first post ever on this forum :)

Welcome to the forums...though I wish it was under better circumstances :(

Sorry, to clarify what is your operating system?

Windows 7 64 bit. ATI Radeon card. Basic machine.

Ok, I tried loading my BG:EE quicksave and it crashes now too. I can't play any Baldur's Gate now :(

What platform do you have your game on also? (Beamdog, Steam or GoG), the installation methods are all slightly different and that could make a difference.

Please realize that because SoD is installing alongside BG:EE, mods installed into BG:EE can also affect your ability to play SoD.

Realize also that it's recently been discovered that downloading SoD or an updated BG:EE did NOT remove additional files from the BG:EE directory...meaning if you EVER had mods installed into BG:EE some or all of that content my still have been there, even if you did a fresh download of the games from your distribution source.

If we are truely talking about a virgin BG:EE Installation with a totally unmodified BG:SoD installation beside it and you're getting crashes without doing anything in the first zone, I have to point at a corrupted installation as the most likely cause.

The platform compatibility was well tested prior to release (yes, we had several QA people playing on Win7).

Ok. I'll try uninstalling everything and trying again. I never played with mods ever. I'll let you know
  • IllydthIllydth Member, Developer Posts: 1,641
When you do, please make sure to remove the local directories from disk as well.

Again, I'd love to know what download platform you're using so I can understand what the installation steps are.

I just uninstalled every Enhanced Edition games I had, and deleted every folders, and I just re installed ONLY BG:EE SOD. So I have no more characters files or old saves. I started a new character from scratch in SOD and the game still froze within 5 seconds. :(

I'm using the beamdog client for download.

Just a thought, but have you tried the "use alternative renderer" option in the graphics settings? You should be able to toggle that before starting a game.

    Will try that.

Edit: Ok, the alternate renderer worked, but the game is much slower now, like the framerate dropped by half. What could cause this?

    At least I can play...

I turned back the renderer off, loaded the quicksave I made and could move around for 10-15 seconds (beautyful and smooth btw!) but then it froze again. Tried it 2 more times, same thing. Could this be graphic related?

@Fardragon I'm having the same problem as gt27mustang. I've uninstalled and deleted everything related to all the BG games (incl vanilla and SoA/ToB) from my hard drive and re-installed SoD (much quicker this time) but BGEE and SoD still crash at character generation or import.

I'm running Windows 7 and this is the error info I get:
    Event Name: AppHangB1
    error=805306369&lang=en

Edit: I can't find "use alternate renderer" in the graphics options.
  • gt27mustanggt27mustang Member Posts: 17
Its in the lower left options, in graphics options. You have to scroll down to see it.

It did install much faster for me too, btw.
  • dunbardunbar Member Posts: 1,603
Thanks, I've found it - but it makes no difference, the games are still unplayable and I get the same error messages (and I've spent so much time downloading this damn game that I've exceeded my download limit and my ISP is now charging me £1.50/GB).

It's now Saturday afternoon and all I've been doing since Thursday evening (apart from sleeping and eating) is trying to get this game to run, and so far not only does SoD not run but BG is f***ed as well and I'm out of pocket to the tune of several Pounds that I couldn't really afford in the first place.

Yes, you would expect the game to slow down, since you are basically turning off your graphics card, which seems to be somewhat incompatible. I suspect that changing screen resolution or fiddling with GPU settings might also make the game work, but I'm not technical enough to give you a more precise suggestion.

@dunbar: it sounds more like your problem is currupted files due to a lousy ISP, rather than a renderer issue.
  • dunbardunbar Member Posts: 1,603
@Fardragon I agree it seems that my files are corrupted somehow but as for my ISP, British Telecom is a reasonably well known and quite large company so I would hesitate to call them "lousy".
  • gt27mustanggt27mustang Member Posts: 17
How do you change resolution on those games?
  • gt27mustanggt27mustang Member Posts: 17
Ok I decided to try what Fardragon suggested and...lo and behold! it works! I lowered my screen resolution from 1366x768 to 1280x768 and so far the games runs great :)

BT?! No, "lousy" is way too good for them. Try incompetent and way overpriced.

    Hi !

I have the exact same problem as gt27mustang.
I bought the BGEE + the new DLC on Steam, and the game freeze just a few seconds after the character creation, without doing anything.
I tryed to reinstall the game twice, but still the same issue.

So, after a refund, I bought the game on GoG without the DLC : same issue.

    I use win7, Intel core i3 and a ATI radeon HD 5470.

I try to use the alternative render option, but the issue is still here.

@gt27mustang how do you manage to change the resolution ? I don't have that choice in the Graphic Option.

    Thanks guys
  • elminsterelminster Member, Developer Posts: 16,317
@Donto you'd need to change your desktop resolution
  • AaezilAaezil Member Posts: 178
Try updating your graphics card drivers
  • DontoDonto Member Posts: 5
    Thank you elminster.
I try with my desktop resolution at 1280x768, but unfortunately the issue is style here :/
  • gt27mustanggt27mustang Member Posts: 17
Exactly, just change resolution on your desktop, not in the game. It fixed it for me. I went from 1366x768 to 1280x768 and so far, not a single hiccup, the game just runs flawless.

My only problem now is that I had a save just before Sarevok, ready to import into SOD, but because I deleted every EE games to try and reinstall everything, I now have to do a speed run through BG:EE to get a new Fighter=>Cleric to import. Oh well, it's not like it's a bad game anyway :D

    Lucky you :)
I don't know what to do now, I will try to update the driver of my graphic card, I have no other idea :/

If changing the renderer didn't work your issue may not be graphics card related.

    Does BGEE 1.3 run properly?

Exactly. For me, changing the renderer temporarily fixed it.
  • dunbardunbar Member Posts: 1,603
@Donto I've got the same problem and I'm also using ATI Radeon, now I'm wondering if the two are connected.
But, 1.3 runs perfectly with this setup and from what I can see of the minimum system requirements for SoD they are the same as for BGEE.

@Aaezil Please can you tell me where I can update my ATI Radeon graphics card (preferably for free because I'm seriously strapped for cash at the moment)?

P.S. I've been asking Beamdog Support with this issue since Saturday morning (GMT) and Have been met with a wall of silence - hopefully they're just very busy and will get around to me in time. Has anyone else heard from them about this issue?

I'm having similar issues. I only have BG:EE installed without any mods. I also re-installed BG:EE after deleting all related folders: the game folder and the folder where the savegames are stored.

    1) Every time I start a new game the game freezes after selecting the gender (the window where we select the portrait doesn't appear). I had a couple of saves from Black Pits and tried to load one of them. The character portraits are just image noise and all the text in the item descriptions and jornal entries are black blocks. If I save the game and try to reload it it just freezes as well.
The menus also have slight graphical glitches, namely I can see black boxes around the text within the buttons.

    2) The 'Alternate renderer' option is off by default and I cannot try it because the game doesn't remember any of the changes I make on the options menu. This happens to all options: from sound volumes to auto-pause criteria.

This is a bit frustrating because this 2.0 patch just broke the game for me.

Go to the baldur.lua file (found in My Documents/Baldurs Gate Enhanced Edition) and look for this line

    SetPrivateProfileString('Graphics','Backend','0')

If its not there then add it.

Change the 0 to a 1 and save the file.

Now in that same folder delete any "baldur.ini" file you find.
