Dual Class Fighter -> Cleric

I am not sure what the behaviour was in the original but dual classing to cleric is different than to other classes regarding the weapon proficiencies. When dual classing from fighter to thief upon exceeding the fighter level one regains all fighter proficiencies AND can allocate proficiency points gained from thief levels to them. Dtto for mage. However dual classing to cleric explicitly prohibits use of non-cleric weapons even after regaining the fighter abilities. I find this to be rather inconsistent although clearly intentional. I guess Berserker with axes dual classing to cleric is out of a question then. :smile:

    Yeah. Clerics and Druids have religious restrictions on weapons. I think a rogue might be able to get around it at epic levels with Use Any Item but fighters are still hindered.

    CaptRory is correct. The Thief will be restricted to his normal weapon list until the dual is complete and you regain your Fighter abilities. From then on, you could add proficiency points to, say, two-handed weapons, despite leveling as a Thief from then on. It's simply a matter of the Fighter's weapon list being added to the Thief's normally restricted list of weapons.

    It's also worth noting that if you put proficiency points into (as an example) Longsword as a Fighter, and put one pip in Longsword as a Thief, that proficiency point will not stack when the dual is complete, and the proficiency point will be wasted. You could continue on to grandmastery with the Longsword while leveling Thief, but only after the dual has been completed.

    The Cleric's list is restricted since it is against his ethos to use weapons that shed blood. The inspiration comes from the former belief that medieval clergy who entered combat would only use such non-edged weapons, but that was apparently inaccurate. In any case, the only thing that can overcome the Cleric's blunt weapon restriction is to multi or dual with Thief, and gain the Use Any Item HLA. The only problem is that the build will never be able to put proficiency points into the normally restricted weapons.

    You can't backstab with weapons that are not on the Thief list though.

    to be very exact here you cant Backstab with ANY weapon not usable by a PURE Class Thief.

    a good example is the Staff of the magi in BG2 , thief's can wield Quarterstaff's but this one is restricted to mage , and a Thief/Mage can wield it but not preform a backstab (which is pretty frustrating since the staff turns you invisible !)

    Dual class works like multi-class. A fighter/cleric can only use cleric weapons. So a dual class, fighter to cleric also will only be able to use cleric weapons even if you alocate points to other weapons when you were a pure fighter.
    The multi-class fighter/thief can use any weapon, so a dual fighter to thief will be able to use any weapon as well.
    While the cleric is forbiden to use blade and piercing weapons, the thief only does not have the skill to use the weapons not avaible to him.
    This is no bug, it is the AD&D rules.
