Opinions On Artwork

Many have commented on the character rendering and outlines however, I have not seen much talk about the backdrops. The areas that your party explores. What are your opinions regarding the look of the areas? Are they as good as BG2? What is your favorite looking area so far. Any areas in other games that do things you like better?

I have not ventured far into SOD because I want to play the game on LOB mode with no mods for the first run but so far I have noticed some really nice effects and animated bits. I think the ground texture in the city of Athkatla stands out and looks bumpy despite it's flat nature, it's one of my favorites from BG2. Have you guys seen anything like that in your adventures so far? What do you think about the overall look of the game world in SOD?

The final areas are PERFECT. I won't spoil but, I thought 'this is how such areas should look. Marvelous!'

That's good to hear. I was impressed by the movies I have seen but it's never the same as actually seeing it on your screen in game. I am a big nut about the backdrops. It's one of the reasons I feel the infinity engine has lasted as long as it has. The artwork is presented the way it was intended without limitation because it was intended to be a 2D backdrop from the start. I think some of the areas in BG2 look amazing even now all these years later. Having an isometric perspective is needed for RTS games or games with RTS elements like this one. With the pixilation minimized on character models I have been impressed overall so far. I can't wait to explore the new areas.

I was disappointed by the in game Boareskyr bridge, because it looks so great in the chapter intro. The statues are not that great in game and Bhaal's blood would have deserved better art.

Otherwise the art is good, but does not quite reach Athkatla and Trademeet standard. On par with BG 1, though.

I see... what about TOB? I noticed that the level of detail changed between SOA and TOB. It's like the level geometry increased but the detail level decreased somehow on texture work. I can tell that SOD has a high level geometry like TOB but in the first dungeon, even though it's detailed the textures do look kind of flat somehow. The texture of the backdrops seemed more intricate somehow in BG2 or even the original icewind dale. I was hoping to see some more of that eventually. Not that I am complaining. The game looks great so far but that is too bad if they couldn't nail that level of quality from BG2. I remember the Elven city up in the great tree looked and still does look amazing.

Like I said, IMHO the final areas are way above the quality of bg2 and tob. Way, way better, vividly animated and immersive. Actually I wish such quality was there for the bg2, which I love the most.

Awesome, I was hoping for more animated bits and bobs. The first time I played SOA I remember just sitting around looking at the little animated gadgets in the first dungeon and being blown away. That is something they could have capitalized more on and didn't probably because of time.

I thought the trees and foliage in the wilderness looked too blurry and washed compared to original BG, but dungeon areas and architecture looked superb. And as people have said before, final areas were the highlights.
