"Brage's Life Spared" broken

TyrRebornTyrReborn Member Posts: 11
I rolled a new char to play through bg1 before I jump into SoD, and while attempting chapter 2 quests, I ran into this broken one.

Normally, after you find Brage, kill his guardian, and answer his riddle, he'll start crying, give you his cursed swod, then wander off-screen and appear in the Nashkel Temple.

Now, however, he starts crying, does not give the sword, just stands there, and the priest in the temple simply offers normal services.

This bug is not game-breaking, but it is really annoying. I want mah xp!

*EDIT* - I spawned the disarmed Brage (brage2) in the Nashkel Temple, and it still did not complete. I looked in my journal, and the quest is still named "The Tale of Captain Brage", not the quest it should have morphed into, "Brage's Life Spared".

The quest ran normally for me, although not as you describe it. What always happens for me, (and it worked just fine in my 2.0 game), is that I answer Brage's riddle, he comes to his right mind and expresses remorse, and I tell him that we will escort him to the temple of Helm in Nashkel. The game then teleports us all there instantly. My party and Brage appear together in the Nashkel temple. There was never any "wandering off-screen".

So, I don't know how you were trying to resolve the quest. Did you agree to escort him to Nashkel? I'm not saying it didn't break in your case, I'm sure it did. I'm just saying it worked okay for me, but it sounds like the way I resolve the quest doesn't match the way you were trying to resolve it. Did you try talking to him again when he "just stood there"? He won't give you that sword until you're teleported to the temple together.

Oh, is that how it ran? Memory doesn't serve, apparently. Regardless, yes, I answered his riddle, and told him I'd take him to the temple. Then nothing happened. He just stands there, and when I talk to him all he says is "I must atone for my many crimes. My poor family...". I'm afraid he got pushed onto an un-walkable location during the fight, and that may be causing it.

*EDIT* I tried spawning a new armed brage (brage), but whatever flags the conversation sets were still set with the new one.

Why do you kill his "guardian"?

The woman who tells you about Brage (comes up to you when you approach the ruined caravans and dead horses) asks you to save him as she is his cousin.

Pretty sure you are not meant to kill her.

And there is no fight at all. Answer the riddle, curse is broken.

If you killed the relative, that's perhaps why the quest isn't working.

There is a fight; Brage attacks his cousin. I killed her because exp. Before 2.0, I'd never had any issues with this quest, and I did it exactly the same way. Again, however, I suspect this is because he pathed onto an un-walkable area, while he was trying to kill his guardian.

*EDIT* I'll make a new game and power through to there, later, to see if I can replicate this problem. If not, I'll delete the thread and move on.

It has been like this for me since 1999, also in BGEE 1.3:
Creep up to the woman guarding Brage, initiating fight with her. Withdraw and make sure she follows, at least so that Brage can't see what's happening. Kill her, loot her equipment.
Talk to Brage, choose the correct option.
What happens at this point is that the party is force-moved from the area back to the Nashkel temple, where the priest thanks the party for bringing Brage back, and gives the party Brage's sword.
So, I've always killed his relative AND solved the riddle - and the quest has always worked for me.
But wouldn't be surprised at all if it is broken now, unfortunately.

Ok so, I tested it again, same deal; went in, killed the guardian, talked Brage down, and everything worked. Got ported to the temple, got exp, etc.

So, apparently, he must have gotten placed on an unreachable location, and that prevented the teleport. Alas, all the lost exp!

Hm...I have never had to kill his cousin. He has always simply asked me his riddle and teleported away to Nashkel peacefully. This method works just as well, I suppose.
