sound stutters, what can I do?

Generally my installation works fine. One of the bugs, however, is that the sounds is not smooth. There's constant interference. It's not loud but I can't play music and it's even in the voices. Tried a re-install. No mods. I use, ubuntu/Steam. Anybody know what I can do?
