Looking for playthrough ideas

Like many of you I’ve long suffered from chronic restartitis in these games. I can’t seem to pick a class and stick with it from Candlekeep to the end of ToB!

As such, I’m reaching out to the Beamdog community to help me decide! :)

Here’s what I’m looking for:
  • A character that is challenging to play, with a steady, gentle power-curve (weak at the beginning, powerful at the end)
  • One that complements, and mostly doesn’t overlap with, the NPCs (particularly the “canon” ones: Imoen, Jaheira, Khalid, Minsc and Dynaheir in BG1; Yoshimo/Imoen, Jaheira, Minsc and Aerie in BG2).
  • One that offers different approaches to the game besides hack and slash or spell spamming.
Here are my ideas for now:

1. Skald.
I’ve played through BG1 and BG2 with a Blade, but I ended up playing it mostly like a Fighter/Mage. With the Skald I wanted to play more like a proper Bard: a support character that makes the team stronger, with a lot of lore and charisma. Alternatively, a Jester.

2. Halfling Thief (no kit)
With the lack of good-aligned single-class thieves in BG2, I was considering a basic thief throughout the saga, and explore all of their unique tricks, such as traps, and backstab. However, with Yoshimo and, perhaps, Jan, a single-class Thief could be a little redundant. Alternatively I could play a multiclass Fighter/Thief (like a mini-Coran, or a good-aligned Montaron)

3. Mage (no kit)
I almost never play strictly magic characters, so it’s about time I give it a shot. However, I think this might overlap with Imoen and Aerie.

4. (Truly) Lawful Good Paladin (Cavalier, perhaps?)
This is more of a role-playing challenge: truly playing as lawful good (which means no searching through people’s houses, no stealing, attempt to be honourable at all time (which also means no Edwin, no Dorn, etc). Might get boring…

What do you think? Any other ideas?

Install Rogue Rebalancing, roll a Jester, and sit back and laugh as your song drives the enemies insane. Or alternatively play a Skald and inspire the team with your epic power ballads.
