Cautious question....

I really want to know.......shout I purchase SoD? I've been reading on the forums a lot of mixed reactions to it. I just don't want it to ruin my playing of BG 1&2.

I'll give you a short flowchart.

Did you like ToB for BG2?

Yes: It is of similar caliber, get the 20 dollar base edition

No: It's a guess, then, give it some time for reviews to even out in their content, then make a decision, perhaps wait for a sale.

Even with the mixed reactions (which is mostly due to the controversy, not on the overall content), this is still BG we're talking about here. Would it not haunt you for the rest of your life to not have even at least tried it yourself and just relied on the words of others? This is not just any other game, c'mon this is Baldur's Gate. It transcends race, age, sex, creed, religion, behind the scene political agenda (if any), reviews, even time itself as it never grows old. ;)

And oh, the gaming media review so far has been positive, 87 ave.

I liked the original BG 1&2 but I just don't to play an expansion that doesn't truly add to original games but detracts from them.

It adds a bit of minor exposition to how Irenicus gets ahold of you. It's not largely important to the story, but minorly so and Caelar in and of herself is quite the lovely addition to the list of interesting characters in the BG tale. I like Caelar more than I liked Sarevok. And I liked Sarevok a good bit.

Solid yes. This expansion is better than Tales of the Sword Coast. 20 bucks is less than two tickets to a movie.

If you are offended by someone saying "my parents thought I was a boy" -- and I don't know why you would be -- don't ask the cleric about her name. That's what this controversy is putatively about. That's #$@ing it.

I'm not offended by the quote you gave. I just want to make sure it truly adds to the story and isn't a useless add on.

Definitely, I honestly cant fathom why a lot of people act this butthurt, i guess they'll rebel to anything given the opportunity. Also remember there is no place for truth on the internet, so best is to try it yourself, it is dirt cheap.

Yes, but you might want to wait if you don't like to potentially deal with some bugs. I haven't experienced any issues, but I know others have. At some point, though, you should buy the game.

@Lelo The bugs are minimal and not game breaking. If you liked BG and BG2, go for it. The best thing this expansion has to offer is that it feels like BG.
@Shar , I guess this is the first time Shar and Moradin agree on anything... but don't get any strange ideas, Lady of Darkness!
