What should I buy now?

I'm about to get my Bassilus reward and will have 6,200 gold. I'm wondering what item(s) I should spend it on? Or is there something bigger I should save for? I have:

Fighter (me)
Imoen
Ajantis
Viconia
Neera

The only major items we have so far:

Plate mail (2)
Ring of Protection +1 (2)
Ring of Wizardry
Elves' Bane
Boots of Stealth

Recommendations? Thanks.

I don't like to buy major purchases till I have 20 reputation which gives you a sizable discount on price. (This may be a problem with your party, however). Full plate mail from the Beregost blacksmith is good and costs <5k with a maxed reputation and a high charisma score. Another nice purchase which is cheaper is the +1 composite long bow at the tavern with Marl (if you have long bow proficiency).

I currently have an 11 rep and 18 charisma. I've thought about waiting and saving for the full plate mail which is about 7,000 right now.

My advice would be not to buy anything (apart from necessary spell scrolls) until you can enter BG city.

Yup, keep saving, you get good weapons through quests and reputation rewards as well, it will hold you over just fine until you get more gold.

Money really isn't much of an issue in Baldur's Gate. Full Plate Mail is a huge effectiveness boost. I'd just grab it right away. Eventually you'll have the gold to buy anything and everything.

Running with Neera? Spend your money as you get it. Why let a surge spend it for you? Shadow armor +3, poison dagger and crossbow of speed are all excellent options

I like to get my defences up as quickly as possible so I break the bank in order to get my frontline tank the best armour and shield asap. Also when buying highly priced items, if I've got one npc in my party with a significantly higher CHA I temporarily 'promote' that character to the party leader slot for the negotiations, thus getting a slightly better price.
Edit: Just noticed that you have 18 CHA anyway, but it's worth remembering for the future.

Hey, make sure to look at the bottom, Eastern part of Nashkel in order to get some sweet armor. Its by a farm. Hope you like wearing green ;)

Tell me about it, my Cavalier went through so much of the game as green. Making a point to not wear that on my next character. Sure, it's some of the best bloody armor in the game, but it gets so boring to look at for so long.

To the OP - Imoen can always use some magical arrows, keep an eye out for +1s. I imagine you've given Neera a sling, so some +1 bullets can be handy. Heck, you can get a +1 sling for dirt cheap.

Get an Ankheg shell and have it made into a set of armor (4000 gp and a few days) - its really the best non-magical armor in the game - actually its the best armor in the game since it works as well as full-plate and you can wear magical protection as well.

    OR

I would also suggest buying some wands for Neera - you can sleep or fear wand for her.

You can find this for free if you know where to look. You can even get it at level 1 without a fight at all.

It wouldn't be bad to have two sets, given that party. Commissioning Ankheg plate early makes sense because it's never going to get any cheaper; reputation doesn't affect the price.

(Ankheg Plate isn't really the best in the game, though. Full Plate's AC is better by 1 vs. slashing and 2 vs. piercing and missile. Its only disadvantage is weight.)

I agree with getting a Sling +1 early because it's so cheap, and I also think the Short Bow +1 is a good early choice. It's reasonably affordable, and there are no other magical short bows available until you reach Baldur's Gate.

Necklace of missiles sold in the carnival is an early buy for me. A fireball has many uses.

I'd go with the Ankheg Armor. I don't like fear effects; then you have to chase your enemies halfway across the map.
