Jamven and Chorster attack the vines

Hello all,

In the underground river we find Jamven and Chorster held by vines by a large tree. Im sure Im missing something easy, but any idea how to free them?

You can dispel magic or just attack the vines with a melee weapon.

Further to what Wesley said,

to attack the vines, you basically force-attack one of the two NPCs; the first time I did it, it took one hit to free them. The second time, it took two - and the second hit seemed to do some damage to the npc. I was concerned that I would turn them hostile, but that didn't happen.

I actually tied both first, that's why I was stumped. attacked and they went red, and dispel magic didn't take, so I assumed I was missing something, but tried again, and it took a few tries but they were free.
