Why are some characters invulnerable in this game?

I had an evil character who didn't like a random poet's song so he just decided to kill him for fun, but my weapon did nothing. I was rolling critical hits, nothing was wrong with my katana, but it did no damage.

I think Volo might've also been invincible in the same manner. I thought I could kill people without fail in BG, did something change in EE?

maybe you want to tell us which particular bard earned your wrath and i might stab my knife into his guts to make sure !

Edit: Checked up on Volo , he indeed would make a great Chewing Gum for a Dragon ...infinite flavor and everlasting.

Sure, Non-party bards get all the perks while the ones we can pick up for our party are utter crap. It's just not fair, I say.

You can't kill plot-critical NPCs or the game would become unwinnable. Also, some random NPCs might just have been flagged by the devs as immortal.
