[Multiplayer] World Map Area Transition Crash

My friend and I bought the game recently to play together and while we can connect, create characters, etc fine, whenever we try to change areas on the world map, there is a very high chance that one of us will crash. It isn't related to any specific area and seems to happen the second either one of us clicks an area to move to.
General system info:
*Both players are playing on the Steam version. We don't have Siege of Dragonspear installed.
*The issue occurs on both the v2.0 and v1.3 version.
*I'm on win7 64bit, and my friend is on win8 64bit.
Problem:
We are playing on a unmodded version of the game aside from sharing an identical custom portraits folder with each other.
We tried various things other users have suggested in the past to solve the issue and none of them seemed to work:
-Relinquishing control of all characters to the host didn't do anything.
-Forwarding ports and playing on TCP/IP didn't do anything.
-Having either player (the host or the client) do the area transition causes the crash with roughly the same rate.
-Validating
So far, this only happens when moving between areas on the world map.
Expected behavior: The game loads in the new area normally.
Current behavior: The game frequently crashes on area change for either player.
Additional notes: Neither of us have this problem in single-player. I played the game for several hours alone today and was able to move between areas without issue.
Unfortunately, while we can work around other issues, this issue renders MP totally unplayable for us.
Thanks for your time. If anyone has suggestions for ways to fix or work around this issue, we'd both be grateful.
